Stop and spare a glance at that emancipated child with his windblown brown hair, dead hazel eyes, lips parched and cracked with thirst and arms so slender that look like they may fracture with the next gust of wind.

Have you ever given thought to what his future might hold for him? Maybe if you would have given him that leftover food from your lunch, which would have been manna for him, you would have extended his life by a few more days.

Hunger, a force no one wants to reckon with, a force which is on the rise for the third consecutive time this year. The Green revolution passed by, so did the White revolution, but the Hunger revolution is yet to come.

From 783.7 million people affected by hunger in 2014, that number increased to 784.4 in 2015, and 804.2 in 2016; the latest report bumps the number of those affected to 820.8 million (Data and statistics taken from the Smithsonian magazine)

Parents think twice about feeding themselves and give in to their children's priorities.
Hunger has forced single mothers to price their bodies and single fathers to work overnight shifts at the mills, with a side business of drugs under the table. It forces a human to give in to his primal needs and make his dreams and ambitions a second step of his life.

We see at least a handful of homeless humans on a daily basis. These people have a very simple way of living their lives. Wake up, beg, scrounge for food and sleep. They have no care of who might win the next elections or which public figure lost his/her life. They are aware that the end for them will be death, not giving a damn about the 'how, when and why' of it.

We see the women lining the streets at night, wearing their most provocative clothing, in hopes of catching a fish in their net. Some adhere to this lifestyle by choice but some are forced to perform it by having no other options to choose from.

The roots of hunger are deep into the core of the Earth, and it won't be an easy task to uproot this huge tree which shelters millions of humans underneath it.

The best we can attempt to do is make conscious efforts to prevent wastage of food and donate to legitimate agencies who work towards eradicating global hunger.

Until next time mates,
Xyris Vendetta.
