I am a strong believer of the fact that if you don’t walk out of a movie theatre with a smile on your face, feeling absolutely content and having secretly shed a few tears whilst watching it, then it wasn’t worth your money.
And there is nothing better than a good, old romcom to help you forget all the worries and burdens that have been troubling you. A warm, comfy blanket, a steaming cup of coffee, and a cheesy chick flick is my idea of a perfect night.
So here is a list of my favourite romcom movies, which I hope will help you escape your life’s daily struggles and make you believe in happily ever afters even if it is for a couple of hours.
To all the boys I’ve loved before
Topping my list, is this netflix original which promises to take you on an emotional roller coaster. It is a perfect blend of happy and sad, hurtful pasts and bright futures, romance and comedy. Set in present day America, it is a story about Lara Jean, a cute, introverted nerd who loves reading about romances but is too scared to actually be in one and Peter Kavinsky, the popular jock in school, crazy about a girl who doesn’t love him back. Lara Jean’s wit and Peter’s charm complement each other perfectly, which makes watching this movie a truly magical experience.
No strings attached
This movie will shatter any and all dreams you previously had about the concept of friends with benefits. Natalie Portman, who plays a doctor and very strongly believes that there is no point of falling in love since everything eventually comes to an end meets Ashton Kutcher, a hopeless romantic trying to make his way in life by escaping the shadows of his extremely succesful father. This is a story of two people, trying to defy love and ironically, fall right into it.
Crazy, stupid, love
A movie potraying multiple storylines in one, is a story of a married couple going through a rough patch in life which eventually causes them to separate and part ways. Steve Carell’s perfectly timed humour, Julianne Moore’s grace, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s steaming chemistry on screen delivers a story which will make you laugh, cry and will restore your faith in the fact that love can survive all odds.
How to lose a guy in 10 days
Two journalists, trying to make it to the top of their respective games, cross ways and decide to use each other for their own personal agenda and benefit. Not knowing they would actually grow fond of each other, both regret their decisions along the way and eventually fall in love. This movie, starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson is the perfect mixture of cute and funny which will keep you occupied on a lazy saturday evening.
Pride and prejudice
One of the most celebrated novels of all time is Jane Austen’s masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice. Remaking a classic is always a daunting task. Despite the pressure, this movie made audiences fall in love with this story all over again. The perfectly imbalanced Bennet family and the timeless love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr.Darcy still manages to capture hearts all across the world.
Me before you
Caution: watch with a very large box of tissues.
The story of a quadrapegic man who was previously one of the most successful businessmen possesing a love for adventure sports, played by Sam Caflin and his simple, sweet nurse with an outrageous fashion sense perfectly played by Emilia Clarke will make you weep with joy and pain, till you won’t feel your eyes anymore.
Sense and sensibility
Set in Victorian England, this is an unsusual love story about three sisters and their widowed mother and their struggles and setbacks in a world without their father and his inheritance. The eldest sister, played by Emma Thompson is a simple, extremely responsible, intelligent woman who is not very vocal about her emotions. She falls in love with a similar man but gets her heart broken. On the contrary is her sister, played by Kate Winslet who is an outgoing, handsome lady with many suitors and who is much more expressive of her feelings. While watching this movie, there will be moments when you recognise yourself on screen and understand the glories and horrors of love and the importance of choosing the right person to share it with.
Pretty Woman
A movie way ahead of its time, Pretty Woman is a depiction of the fact that no matter who you are, where you’re from, you have a chance of living your fairy tale. The story revolves around Julia Roberts, who plays a local prostitute and Richard Gere, a well off entrepreneur, who hires her for a few social events and unintenionally falls in love with her and tries to bridge the gap between their two world. This whirlwind romance will replenish your faith in happy endings and is a true example of the line love has no labels.
Life as we know it
Disgusted by each other during their first encounter, Eric and Holly are forced to come together to raise the child of their best friends who pass away in a car crash. Putting aside their hatred and differences, they work out different plans to raise their common goddaughter and realise they can stay in the same room without tearing each others’ heads off. Over time, they start enjoying each other’s company and eventually fall in love, with each other and the baby.
17 again
The story of a middle aged man who wishes to be 17 again as he is fedup of his monotonous and boring life and regrets his past decisions of choosing love over a promising career in basketball and his wife who eventually leaves him because of his bitterness towards her. Cursing himself for his life crumbling around him, one day he wakes up and finds himself in the body of his old self and realises he has another chance at life.
