It mightsound like a leg-pull, but you do realise that the librarythat you visit is haunted, don’t you? No? Then read on…...

The Old Library, Versailles

In august 1901, It was a hot day when Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain (their real names) visited the Palace of Versailles. They did not think much of the palace and so decided to walk to the Petit Trianon, a smaller building used more than 100 years previously by Marie Antoinette.

On the way, the two women became lost after missing a turn and, unbeknownst to them, passing their destination and this is how the story beginssome of the buildings they reported seeing were not on the grounds in 1901, and there was no explanation for the people they saw. However, doubters showed through careful research everything seen including what “Marie Antoinette” wore could have been found described in old documents, or in drawings. The exception was the bridge the women reported crossing. There was no record of that structure. It apparently had never existed.

Several ghosts have been sited at the Old Library. A full body apparition of a little girl has been seen where the children's section used to be. An old woman who used to own the place has also been sited. She waited and waited for her son to return from the war, and she died a few days after she learned that he was killed in action. She walks around the yard and by the old well wearing a white nightgown and white slippers. There are cold spots in the library where her chair once was.
National Library, kolkata

The largest library in India is much more than ahaunt for just book lovers. This place is also one of the most horror places in Kolkata. This treasure trove for bibliophiles attracts the lovers of ghost stories in equal numbers. The story of Lady Metcalfe's ghost haunting its corridors has been there for quite some time; a lot of testimonies support the story with people reporting the presence of someone simply watching them.

Add to it the mystery of the hidden chamber that was discovered by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) in 2010, a chamber that is rumoured to have served as a torture chamber during the British rule in India. As per witness accounts, such paranormal experiences increased all the more after 12 labourers lost their lives in an accident during some renovation work at the site. Sounds like some grist for the rumour mill.Kolkata was much loved by the Mughals, French, British and Dutch, almost every lane has a tale to tell, some with a twist of horror.Kolkata is a hub of paranormal activities and black magic.

Peoria Public library

Unlike other libraries it is believed to be thehome to as many as a dozen different ghosts. The land on which the library is built was cursed by a previous tenant. In 1830 after the death of Mrs. Andrew gray’ brother she got the custody of her nephew. He often got into trouble with the law and eventually hired an attorney named David Davis who took out a mortgage on Mrs. Gray’s house as security. When Mrs. Gray’ nephew couldn’t pay his bills, David Davis sued to foreclose the home to collect money. Mrs. Gray evicted her nephew and after sometime his body was found floating in the river. Mrs. Gray cursed her property and all of its future owners.

In 1894 Peoria purchased the property and built a library on it. Considering that at the time of the land purchase there were three different lots which made up the purchase, it’s entirely feasible to believe the library is not built directly on the same footprint as the house..

The first three library directors died under unusual circumstances which lent credibility to Mrs. Gray’s curse. In 1966, the original library was torn down, and a new one was built in its place. The ghosts have remained and continue to haunt the library though. Patrons have reported seeing a man wandering the halls dressed in early 20th Century attire. Employees have seen his face in a basement doorway, among other things such as hearing their names called when no one else is around and feeling cold drafts where there ought not to be any. Whatever happened in this library’s past, it seems to have no affect on patrons today. People still use the library on a daily basis and no one seems adverse to having to stay there a little later in the evenings.

Haunting are not the only strange things about the library…
