Maitreyi Devi, an eminent poet of Bengal has given a delightful narration of her accounts with the great poet, the novel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in her book Rabindranath: Grihe o Vishwe (Rabindranath: at Home and in the World).

There she has unfolded a particular incident that touched her immensely-

Once Tagore was teaching a Japanese boy the dance with Tagore’s famous song ‘Basante Phool Gaanthlo’. Despite being an extremely graceful dancer, the boy struggled to deliver it with perfection. So Tagore kept on delivering him instructions and singing the song several times…..

In this pandemic stricken world full of agony, his words take us to a place where solace meets solidarity. For he has been the one who ignited our hope and aspiration, ‘You are not alone in your pain; I understand and share and would like to make a difference.’

The song ‘Basante Phool Gathlo’ was first published in 1915 and adopted in the drama ‘Phalguni’.

This song talks about the culmination of spring(Basanto) and the commencement of summer. The poet hints at the beginning of everything new and lively. The whole world is about to start dancing to the rhythm of youthfulness.

The song was first published in 1915 and adopted in the drama ‘Phalguni’.

As today marks the end of spring 2020, here’s my humble endeavor to find and spread happiness. I could not think of any better way than teaching my little cousin some steps with famous Tagore’s song ‘Basante phool gaanthlo.’
