Since the beginning of time humans have been excessively competitive. We have always
segregated things as either black or white and have always failed to see the grey in them. This
excessive competitiveness either results in Victory or Defeat. Victory is seen as white and
thus the source of people's joy and happiness. Defeat, on the other hand, has been seen as a
source of disappointment and sadness. From times immemorial, people have often failed to
acknowledge the fact that Defeat is the inevitable gateway to Victory.
Adolf Hitler famously said - 'Anyone can deal with victory. Only the mighty can bear defeat'.
Defeat is inevitable and it is certain to come to each man at some or the other point of time in
life, but what really differentiates champions from the rest of the world is how they react to
defeat. Most men fail to see that Defeat is temporary. They fail to see beyond it and as a
result - Quit. To some of us, quitting may seem as a rational as well as the easiest thing to do
post defeat, but remember - night is darkest just before the dawn. Once you face Defeat and
learn to sail through it, Victory cannot be far behind.
One of the most celebrated and respected scientists of all time, Thomas A. Edison faced more
failures while trying to invent electric bulb than most people do in their lifetime. But he never
allowed his failures to take control. He learnt from them and with every defeat he crawled his
way forward towards victory. When asked on how he handled the repetitive failures he came
up with something priceless - ''I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won't work.
Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when
they gave up.” So the next time you are about to give up post facing a defeat, remember that
either you defeat Defeat or Defeat shall defeat you.
As unacceptable as it may seem to us, Defeat will always be a major part of our lives. Either
you can allow the small defeats to take control of your life, or you can learn to trade with it
and prepare for the larger Victory which is always around the corner. You can cringe about
your Defeats or you can learn from them and take a step closer to your Victory. It is these day
to day failures that will script your way to Victory if you learn to tame the impact they have
on you.
Defeat Defeat before Defeat defeats you.
