WHY PEOPLE FALL IN DEPRESSION?

Hey guys! How are you all? The topic that I am going to discuss with you today is DEPRESSION. The reason I am writing on this topic is that now a days there are plethora of cases where people in one way or the other fall into depression.

One needs to understand what is depression?

Depression can be understood as a mood disorder which is characterized by a feeling of sadness, and persistently low mood. Depression can be diagnosed by the doctor or a mental health specialist on consultation.

According to the report of World Health Organization (WHO), depression is the most common illness worldwide and the leading cause of disability. It is estimated that around 350 million people are affected by depression globally.

But there is a difference between depression and fluctuations in mood. Giving temporary emotional responses while facing the challenges of everyday life do not constitute depression and also the feeling of grief out of the death of someone close is not considered as depression.

Signs and symptoms of depression are as follows:

1.Depressed mood

2.Lack of interest or no pleasure in activities

3.Low appetite

4.Insomnia or hypersomnia

5.Loss of energy

6.Feeling of guilt

7.Impaired ability to take decisions

8.Recurrent thoughts of committing suicide

If we talk about the causes of falling into depression, it can be asserted that there is not a single source. There may be likely to be many complex combinations of factors that contribute to this.

Some of the factors are as follows:

1.Due to changes in neurotransmitter levels

2.Environmental

3.Psychological and social factors

Other factors include:

•Life events such as divorce, relationships with family, financial crunch, excessive stress etc.

•Childhood trauma

•Chronic pain syndromes such as excessive diabetes, cardiovascular disease etc.

But need not to worry. Depression is a treatable mental illness. Three components can be:

a.Support

b.Psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

c.Drug treatment

What to do now?

The victims of depression require excessive care, love, affection and mental support especially from the family members. Instead of treating them brutally, may worsen their condition because they are not in a state of mind of understanding anything as they will take every situation and circumstance or the talks in a negative way and start cursing their destiny. They are required to be felt that they are the luckiest person of this universe and bestow on them aura of happiness so that they start positively taking their lives.
