Belonging to a middle-class family who has the conventional take on life, pursuing a very out of the box degree was quite a task. I graduated last year and had plans to do my Masters soon after, but things didn’t go as planned since I couldn’t get through in the colleges I had prioritized. I took a hit, cried a couple of nights, some went sleepless, but I never resisted the reactions. Days, weeks, even months passed by and I had no clue since this came unplanned, the first *EVER* unplanned event of my life! I didn’t know how to handle it.

One fine night I let all the emotional, negative and upside thoughts flow through my mind and decided I had enough of this “all-time low” phase. I told myself, this is not the end of the world, the drop year probably has something good coming to you. I gave myself a pep talk, said “it’s not like you couldn’t get through in any of the universities, it’s just that you refused to settle for less ”, as back then I had gotten selected in 3 colleges already but they weren’t in my priority list so I turned down the offers.

I decided to make sure to turn this “Drop-year” (as they call it) to the most productive year possible! Following are the ways in which I sharpened myself and did many of the things that I otherwise wouldn’t have done!

1.JOIN COURSES!
There are millions of free, or if not, then affordable online course from Global Universities with no eligibility restrictions! I took up around 3 courses, 2 out of which were academically related to my field and one taught me about the vibrant cultures around South-East Asia. And a cherry on the top, you earn a certificate on completion. I am currently planning on learning Sign-Language as I wanted to do it since I was a child. It’s only mesmerizing how a person can sit on their couch and learn and practically see the whole universe on their electronic devices.

2.WORK!
Being a student and having the will to do adventures or even checking out the pizza joint next door can be expensive leisure! I totally understand! But hey, there are plenty of places, ventures and companies who hire Interns with nominal wages, enough for a student to go grab a couple of beers with their friends on weekends. The best options include working part-time, data entry jobs, content writing, marketing, etc.! Not only does this make you “hang-out" expense-independent but adds up in your resume as an experience.

3.BE BOLD, TAKE THE LEAP!
To get somewhere you have to be determined. I decided to give studying abroad a shot! I researched days and nights about various studying options and countries best suitable for me and the course of my interest. I consulted a counselor, put in extra efforts to take my profile a notch above and made applications. A week of waiting and BOOM! To my surprise, I had received an offer from one of the best British Universities.!

It’s that moment I realized, had I settled for any college, had I doubted myself and not applied, had I not taken the bold step of dreaming to go out there, I wouldn’t have known what I am capable of, I wouldn’t have known what I deserve.

Life seems impractical, tough and rough, but all you need to do is have faith in yourself, be positive, do positive and TAKE THE LEAP! You’ll be astounded to see what variety of opportunities the world has for you to offer!

HUSTLE..! DON'T SETTLE!
