Ragging as an issue has always been a much discussed topic. Despite the fact that there are several rules that have been designed to curb the menace of ragging, the problem still exists in India. Behind the pretence of welcoming new students to college, ragging, in reality is such a practice where the senior students get an excuse to harass their juniors. Not only those freshemen have to sustain those heinous practices but also have to develop a fear psychosis that haunts them throughout their lives. Today, it has been turned into a nightmare for them.
It has been researched and established that ragging has its roots in certain European Universities where seniors played practical jokes at the time of welcoming freshmen to the institutions and with time this practice became popular throughout the world. However, now it turned into an obnoxious crime. Today, almost all countries of the world have enacted laws that ban ragging. But sadly, India, has not been able to free itself from the clutches of this inhuman practice. Often we use to come across news about such incidents. Once, a final semester student of NIFT had allegedly commented on the dress code of a girl, and said to wear salwar instead of jeans despite the fact that NIFT has a seven member anti-ragging squad.
It has now become the new norm in colleges, can be defined as structured bullying- a tradition that passes from one batch to the next. Ragging is a problem of the students and by the students, and therefore it is needed to be solved by the students themselves.
Unfortunately ragging does not have a fix solution. Passing a law or an effort to condemn it won't solve this issue so easily, as many parents and others do not held this as a serious issue. So, college must have a counseling cell with the friendliest teacher on the board. Counselors can help the student to open up and talk about their sufferings and problems that they had or they might face. Although from many surveys it was found that there are few who are not against Ragging, rather they say that it helps to increase the level of interaction between seniors and juniors. But one should know that complications that arises out of ragging could be beyond someone’s imagination because nobody can predict how the victim would react. So this is the time that we should become more conscious of our practices before more innocent students become victims of it.
