Believe it or not, those accessories that cover your feet have a 40,000- year history. It is hard to imagine a time before the invention of shoes. Yet what started as a practical venture has grown into booming industry. The designs have transformed drastically over thousands of years in the fascinating history of footwear.

From evidence, it shows that shoes were invented around in the Middle Paleolithic period approximately 40,000 years ago. The earliest prototypes were soft, made from wraparound leather, and resembled either sandals or moccasins.

Later, in Europe’s Baroque period, women’s and men’s shoes were similar!

In early 1800s, women’s and men’s shoes finally began to differ from one another in style, color, heel and toe shape. After much fluctuation, the standard for a man’s heel finally settled at 1inch.

In 20th century, the face of footwear changed drastically. This was due to technological advances that made the shoe making simpler. During the Great depression, black and brown shoes dominated the American market. Women shoes made dramatic alteration but men shoes remained same.

As the presence of women in workplace grew in 20th century style of heels changed.
