Women find joy in finding outfits with pockets. For some reasons, women find it difficult to find proper pockets on skirts, trousers or dresses. When you do find one, it’s like wonder, there is actually somewhere you can put your phone and wallet, what a joy!

But why is this so hard to find? The relationship between women’ wears and pockets have become a somewhat charged, political issue, so there are explored interesting theories behind the lack of available pockets.

1. It encourages women to buy more bags

From a business point of view, bag manufacturers must love the fact that women have nowhere to keep their keys or phones.

No pockets means you are forced to buy more purses, clutches and totes- it’s a huge source of income for the bag industry.

2. It restricts freedom

The history of pockets is steeped in sexism as women were expected to carry bags from around 19th century. From a physical point of view, a bag can be a burden- it restricts freedom of movement and weighs you down.

Journalist says- “The less women could carry, the less freedom they had”.

Even if you do find clothes with pockets, they tend to be small and tight- hardly to carry a smartphone.

3. It tries to make women more streamlined

Most of the top designers in the fashion industry are male. As a result they dictate female style, many of whom traditionally accepted to make women look slim and streamlined. Even some trousers and coats, which you’d expect to have pockets, have them sewn up to streamline the silhouette.

Men probably don’t understand how irritating it is not having pockets, because they’ve never really experienced.

4. It works for the fast- fashion industry

In world of fast fashion, it takes more time, money and efforts to produce clothes with pockets. Hence some labels ignore to have pockets in favor of producing it at cheaper price.

5. More visual way to separate the gender

In 1954, the iconic designer Christian Dior reportedly said: “Men have pockets to keep things in, women for decoration”. So men need pockets because they’ve useful stuff to keep, while women are reduced to mere decoration?

The fact women increasingly wore clothes featuring pockets during world wars, when they were taking on more jobs.

"Many labels now are getting into attaching a pocket to female clothing also because of increased demand and for freedom to movement."
