The fashion industry with its ever changing trends has a big role to play in polluting the environment. But with increased awareness among the consumers, many apparel manufacturers have switched to employing eco-friendly methods of production. Designers, activist, innovators, scientists and engineers are coming up with sustainable technological processes that can be used in fashion industry to make fashion green.

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, in the way we live and what is happening around us”- Coco Chanel

Although fashion has been evolving for years which express one’s ideas, cultures, values, personality and interest, its impact on the environment is becoming hazardous. Fashion industry holds the responsibility to protect environment and its resources. The demand of increasing fashion is putting pressure on the environment.

The culture of affordable fashion has increased the number of shopaholic, thus increasing demand of shopping.

Shopping cannot die since fashion cannot die. It is the need of an hour to identify sources to lessen pressure on environment. The textile industry is the first stage and main culprit in pollution as dyes and pre-treated chemicals go directly in water. With increasing pollution manufacturers and consumers are becoming aware of the harmful consequences and are trying alternatives to protect the environment.

1. One such initiative is taken by Birla group by the launch of ‘LIVA’. Liva falls and drapes according to the body and moves with the body. These fibers are not only eco-friendly but versatile and beautiful. Birla cellulose is increasingly engaging with big brands.

Look for LIVA tag while buying garments.

2. AIR DYEING’ is also introduced, it lowers water contamination. It could cut out some 2.4 trillion gallons of water used in synthetic dyeing. One drawback is it is only developed to dye cotton

3. Another recent development is ‘WATER FREE STONE WASHING OF DENIM’. The biotechnologically developed enzymes are biodegradable and do not interfere with nature’s balance.

4. Netherlands launched the ‘WORLD’S FIRST EVER DYEING MACHINES’ that use super carbon dioxide as a replacement of water. The only limitation of this is it can be applied to scoured polyester.

These technologies need to be studies and should be developed for all types of fabrics to lessen pressure on environment.

“Think why, when, what you NEED to purchase while shopping, wear what that pollutes less. WEAR FASHION WITHOUT POLLUTING ENVIRONMENT
