Introduction

Silk weavers from Gujarat migrated to Kashi after a famine and started developing designs. During the Mughal period weaving of brocades (a rich fabric woven with a raised pattern, typically with gold and silver thread) became specialty of Banaras. During the reign of Emperor Akbar it reached its new height. Silk brocade weaving developed excellence. This was the time in height in its popularity.

Decline- Popularity of power loom

There was a decline when power loom started gaining popularity. This made sari cheaper because before it was hand-done and silk weavers faced difficulties.

Rise again

Government imposed a ban on weaving with Chinese silk, to promote domestic silk industry. Sooner, duty free imports were allowed of Chinese crepe yarn. These saris were easily available and at half price, leading to a booming market. Revival of interest in the Banaras weave started among the fashion community. Designer Sabyasachi, Abraham Thakore and Sanjay Garg, took it beyond the traditional form making garments out of fabric.
