“Where East meets West”, “globalization”, “ cultural homogeneity”
Skimming through the newspapers, sipping your morning tea, these are just a few terms which for sure greet you at the beginning of your day.

We read about them, talk big talks about them, even write about them. But do we really understand the depth, the history, the difference and the value of these words ? Or are they just plain synonyms making up for intellectual flaunts?

Keeping this in mind, let us delve deeper into the same.
Cultural homogenization or homogeneity is the reduction in Cultural diversity and increase in Cultural similarities across the globe.

This basically means bridging the Gap between two cultures. This in my opinion, is a form of imitation.

Where the one Cultural practice labelled “better” by a large population of people is simply copy pasted into another.

Take an example of the concept of moving out of one’s parental house and moving into a new place on his own. This concept is being deployed in our country nowadays, imitating the western countries.

All this is done in the name of independent individuals.
What we forget or rather choose to ignore is that a child in these countries is much more independent and self reliant than us.

They can cook their own meals, wash their own laundry and clean their own houses. Whereas we, on the other hand are handicapped without a maid.

Their children are taught to do plumbing, carpentry and basic electric work whereas we rely on experts for the same

The motto of this talk is not to bring down or to glorify cultures, but to throw light on some major differences which do persist.

To conclude, in my opinion, cultural homogenisation should not be a matter of convenience. We cannot just adopt the fashions easy for us and leave out some vital ones. Lest we are all just spinning a web of lies and trouble for ourselves.
