The human mind and psychological behavior are topics that are fascinating and thought-provoking. This article shall deal with one such aspect of human psychology-the Oedipus complex. Something rare, but not unheard of in the real world. One of the most significant yet controversial concepts, was proposed by Sigmund Freud. This term has been coined after a character of Greek mythology ‘Oedipus rex’ who unknowingly kills his father and marries his mother. In simple terms, it means the desire of the male child to have sexual relations with his mother and kill the father. To quote Freud, " the boy wishes to get rid of his father in order to take his place with his mother.” This complex arises during the age of 3 to 6 years. In this stage, the child develops an obsession for the mother and identification with the father. Gradually the intensity of the child’s obsession towards mother increases leading to a craving for a sexual relationship. On the other hand, the identification with the father develops into feelings of jealousy and enmity.

his disorder appears unbelievable since one cannot perceive the mother-child relation in this absurd manner. However, the Oedipus complex does not remain confined to textbooks and such cases do exist in the outside world. Dr. Kamal Bekhazi, a clinical psychologist gives an account of a teenage patient. The 13-year-old boy who came to his clinic was reportedly suffering from high levels of anxiety. In talking about his problem, the mother stated that her son was very clingy and too dependent on her. Hindi Cinema is said to be a reflection of the society. And even in this case, it does not stay back. There have been a few movies that have subtly hinted at this complex. A brilliant example would be of the 2014 movie “Haider”, whose depictions of the relationship between the Son (Haider) and the mother (Ghazaala) can be interpreted as indicating at an Oedipus complex-Haider sensually kisses his mother on the neck twice in the movie. Such a form of affection is generally not part of platonic relationships. Furthermore, Ghazala recounts how in his childhood, Haider used to sleep between his parents, so that his father could not touch her (a very characteristic sign of Oedipus complex). The director of the movie, Vishal Bhardwaj, himself confirmed that the relationship between the mother and son did stem from him having an Oedipus complex, “It exists and I just wanted to show it.”[1]

The Oedipus complex is considered unacceptable, controversial and even unheard of. But it is important for people to learn and understand about this because it happens. Apart from psychological treatment, the support of one's family is also vital which is only possible when everyone is aware of the Oedipus complex
