Many abusive and harassment incidents are faced by women. Be it verbal or physical, women suffer a lot because of these abuses. It is hard to pick a single woman who has not faced any abuses at least once in her lifetime. Women are taught from their childhood to remain submissive to men and this itself makes men feel a bit higher than women. After facing so many abusive incidents, we only teach the girls to be self defensive and brave. We cannot blame the men today, for their behaviour, because the fault is in their upbringing. Why don’t we take time to educate the little boys in our houses to respect and protect women?

It is the duty of everyone in the family to take steps in educating the boys in our homes for a safer and better future. Here are few ideas to train boys to respect girls and womanhood in general.

TEACHING BOYS UNDER 5
The children of this age group learn a lot from their elders. They just see the adults and follow. When the adults respect everyone, the children learn from them and do the same. Use polite language while conversing to them or to any other adult, in front of them. Teach them to recognize when someone needs help and show them how to help.

TEACHING BOYS FROM 5-12
The same instructions from the previous age group can be followed, in addition to the following. It is very important to monitor the media content they watch. Usually boys love watching violent movies and play violent games. The boys of age 9-10 should be given good care. Minimizing the exposure to games and movies that disrespect humanity can help. Boys usually get introduced to pornography at this period and it is high time that they should be educated about this. Let boys know that pornography exists and it is not real. Give them the comfort and make them feel that they can talk to us if anyone tries to show them. Teach them how to react when they see something disrespectful.

TEACHING BOYS FROM 12-18
This is the age when boys get to know more about relationships, where love exists. It is important to teach them about the intimacy and emotions in a relationship. They should know that is wrong to touch or kiss a girl without her consent. They should never mistake a girl’s behavior with them and consider it as consent, unless she confesses herself. It is essential to teach them to treat women equal to men. Teach them to protect women in public places, instead of calling them with names and abusing.
