Progress is progress.

I admit, I never understood it. I never realized it during my morbidly obese days. It was always the same cycle. Start some new diet, because it was abrupt & extreme I'd see massive progress within 1-3 days. Motivation would be sky high, feeling like I got it this time. I felt like I was going to reach my goals in no time.

A week passes, progress starts slow. I haven't changed anything, but I suspect I have. So I turn up a gear. I eat even less & workouts even more. It works for a day or two, but progress still keeps slowing down.

I get frustrated, start to think it's not working and start planning an exit plan. But...

it was still progressing.

Sure the first few days maybe I lost 1-3kg. By week 2, I might have only lost 1kg — week 3, only 0.5kg. Back then, I would have viewed week 2 & 3 as failures because it wasn't the same pace as week 1. I didn't get it.

I didn't get that:

3kg is progress

2kg is progress

1kg is progress

0.8kg is progress

0.5kg is progress

0.1kg is progress

Even maintaining a new low weight for an extended amount of time is progress. People start at a specific kg. If their weight didn't move for over a week, they deem themselves a failure. They don’t see that if you stuck to the same weight for the rest of the year, that's progress.

It’s better than being at 123kg for the rest of the year.

How fast or how much weight we lose isn’t within our control. Weight loss always starts fast and gets slower and slower over time. It’s normal. Super normal. But as long as you’re still losing weight. It’s progress. As long as you’re maintaining a new low weight, it’s progress.

Feeling better & happier about your diet & exercise is also progress. I use to feel guilty and anxious, eating anything that wasn’t fruits & veggies, even though I knew it fit my calories for the day. Being able to enjoy a treat without massive guilt like before, being able to resist temptation from peer pressure or cravings is all progress.

Progress is progress.

It doesn’t always come in the form of a number on the scale. As long as you’re getting better in some shape or form, it’s progress.
