As kids, cartoons meant a lot for us. We related our lives with those characters. It meant answering stupid questions asked by Mickey Mouse or to speak his strange magic spell “Meesca mousca mickey mouse.” It meant feeling proud that our spell has brought his house out. It meant to answer all silly questions by Dora. Yes, we all have done these things. As we grow up, most of us switched to other modes for entertainment like TV serials, movies or education channels but not everyone.

I’m one from that group who have not switched i.e., I still watch cartoons and that too ones like Shinchan, Doraemon or Pokemon. But there is a reason. Whenever I watch an action film my mother says, “Ye kya maar pitaai dekh rahe ho.” (Why are you watching this violence?)

Whenever I am watching a comedy movie she’ll say. “Phir se wahi! Ek hi picture kitni baar dekhoge tum?” (The same movie again! How many times can you watch the same movie?).

I do not enjoy TV serials and I’m fed up of science channels. So what are left are my cartoons.

Initially, I started watching them as I had no option. But as days passed, I started enjoying them just like I did when I was 5 or 6 years old. Earlier, my mom again used to say, “Cartoon chote bacche dekhte hai. Tum bade ho gaye ho.” (Small kids watch cartoons, you are grown up.)

And I was like “This is like Kon Banega Crorepati where despite the number of options and whatever you select, it always turns out to be wrong.”

She didn’t like the idea of me watching cartoons but it was needless to say that she was a child too. So now, she usually accompanies me while I watch these cartoons. Turns out she is also a fan of cartoons now, especially Doraemon. She does not like Shinchan due to the hilarious stuffs he does.

I’ve learned many things from these cartoons, a few of them being:-

  1. ‘Shinchan’ taught me everything can be a great fun if you know how to have fun

  2. Ash from ‘Pokemon’ told me that no matter how strong or weak you are, you should always work for success irrespective of how everything goes around you.

  3. And he also displayed me the skill of making wise and quick decisions while he’s in a Pokemon battle.

  4. ‘Doraemon’ taught me there’s always a solution for every problem.

  5. ‘Ben 10’ reminds me of a famous quote by Mr. Peter Parker aka Spider-Man “With great power comes great responsibilities.”

  6. ‘Courage the Cowardly Dog’ taught me that everyone fears something but the spirit to overcome your fear will make you different from others.

Who said cartoons are a waste of time or they can’t teach you anything? Cartoons can be the best teacher for a kid. Kids learn a lot from watching cartoons. So why shouldn’t be it used in a better way? Parents should tell their kids the values displayed by the cartoons like presence of mind, smartness, decision making skills etc. And the kids will learn in a better and efficient way. I write this with the hope that this changes the mentality of people regarding cartoons.
