Apni zindagi mein kayi baar,

Apni mann ki karna chahenge,

Rukk jayenge yahi soch kar ki,

Log kya kahenge.

Kaun hai yeh log,

Jo banaate hai itni baat?

Who log jo baatein na banaaye

Toh mushkil se kat ti hai inki raat.

Agar iss bheedh ke bare mein socha itna,

Toh thoda mushkil hai rehena,

Humaare zindagi ke sapne,

Ban kar reh jaayenge bas ek afsana.

“Log kya kahenge?”- This has definitely killed more dreams than anything in this world. People have buried their fantasies deep down because of this fear. When we were small we did what we desire, we wore what we found comfortable and no one ever pointed out the flaws. But as we grew up, our life was exhibited and people welcomed themselves to criticize the way we lived. We are at this stage where every decision is based on what people will say rather than what will make us happy or what is better for us.

Our society has set up some irrelevant barricades for us. Our parents have adhered to these norms and expect the same from us. They have always taught us to refrain from going against society because we don’t know what society will accept readily. It’s amusing how we have surrendered the key to our life to such people. As we try to achieve our life goals; many people pester us with their own opinions. Our society has this annoying habit of complaining and criticizing our actions. A girl wearing her favorite dress is subjected to the judgmental gaze of the society; people stuck in an abusive relationship can’t divorce their partner because their parents said “Log kya kahenge?”; somebody can’t follow his passion to be a photographer instead of being a lawyer because society says that photography isn’t a real job; a guy can’t marry his love of life because she is Muslim so what will people say? There are countless number of dreams which are concealed because we are taught to prioritize the happiness of society instead of ours. It’s the fear of disapproval of the society which stops us from doing what we want to. This is where we need to slip away and avoid them. Ask them who gave them the right to poke their nose in your matter. Our life is none of their business.

We cannot please anyone and actually we don’t have to. Our life is ours and their life is theirs. Problem solved! What we do is none of their business. This world consists of people who will discourage us at every stage rather than encouraging us. I am perplexed. Since when our life’s decision is in the hands of unknown people of this so-called society for criticism? Why do we care so much about the people whom we don’t even know and maybe not even see them again? Life is too short to care about this phrase “Log kya kahenge?”

It is to all the ‘log’, find your own business, leave us on our own and accept the fact that your opinions don’t matter to us.

Kuchh to log kahenge logon ka kaam hai kehnaa, chhodo bekaar ki baaton mein kahin beet na jaaye rainaa…
