The idea of women literature is itself a problematic one. If we categorize the works of women under women literature then we are drawing a subtle boundary which will prevent the other genders from entering this outstanding sphere. So I’ll just mention a few women writers who wrote on general issues which every sex will appreciate.

Virginia Woolf : The pioneer of stream of consciousness, Virginia Woolf is one of the most read modern writers. She is undoubtedly famous for her novels but her essays significantly contribute to the foundation of feminist writing. Written In her later periods ‘room of one’s own’ deals with the necessity of financial independence and a private room for women. Woolf’s every novel more or less deals with the modern techniques, going a long way in describing the characters thought process in continuous flow. Woolf’s other notable works include “Mrs Dalloway”, “Jacobs Room”, “The waves”, “To the lighthouse”.

Toni Morrison : Nobel recipient Toni Morrison is one of the most influential writers, famous for “Beloved”. It is based on the theme of slavery where the characters even after escaping are haunted by the idea of dehumanization.

Maya Angelou : The poet of ‘ know why the caged bird sings’ Maya Angelou is an American activist. Most of her writings deal with individual freedom. Her works highlight racism, slavery and bondage in the most realistic way. “Wings clipped” and “feet tied”, Angelou inspires every individual to break through the suffering cage.

Emily Dickinson: Obsessed with the theme of death Dickinson led most of her life in isolation which is reflected throughout her poems. Her poems, with its unconventional style, syntax and diction have won the hearts. In “Because I Could Not Stop for Death,” she echoes a person advancing towards death.

Jhumpa Lahiri : Writer of a few distinguished novels and a short story “Interpreter of Maladies”, Jhumpa Lahiri portrays marriage, isolation, displacement in the most subtle way. Her characters often suffer from communication gap resulting in displacement. The first one of the collection, “A Temporary Matter” reflects modern age scenario where relationship hampers because of less communication.

Margaret Atwood : Famous for her feminist perspective Atwood’s significant work “ Handmaid Tales” has occupied a space in every Bibliophile’s reading list. Apparently running as a successful series it is a dystopian novel resonating theme of women subjugation.

It’s quite difficult to pen down every name we come across but undoubtedly everyone has a huge contribution to make this world a better place. From Jane Austen to Arundhati Roy they all narrated the social condition in the most beautiful ways.
