The art of storytelling bridges the gap between nations. It helps us to apprehend the cultural, ethical as well as social scenario. Iranian cinema is nowadays serving this cause with marking their name in the history of Academy Awards. Despite cultural restrictions Iranian directors are making movies of diverse taste. Their popularity Iies in the fact, that they are targeting global audience rather than domestic conflicts. Humanistic approach and simple presentation with intriguing plotline are the characteristics of these aesthetic visuals. Here are a few names with which one should start.

Turtles can fly : Directed by Bahman Gobadi, this movie is a war stricken image in a nutshell. It is a story of a boy named Satellite, who works in border area with other children cleaning landmines and selling its parts. This movie is all about hard reality and the horror of war; as they experience it first handedly. Bahman uses the metaphor of turtle in a scene and shows how armless boy tries to swim almost resembling turtles. This particular scene can be the reason to watch Turtles can fly.

The Separation: Winner of Academy Award in the category of best foreign film, The Separation is a must watch Iranian movie. Directed by Asghar Farhadi, the Separation narrates a tale of a mother who wants to leave Iran for better livelihood, but is obstructed by her husband since he couldn’t leave to take care of his father suffering from alzheimer; gradually looking forward to marriage separation. The situation Farhadi creates is difficult to judge, since both are correct in their own ways. This movie portrayed human emotion in the most brilliant way leaving you with a kind of discomfort for few moments.

About Elly : This movie is quite different from other Farhadi movies; engaging, thrilling with lots of withholding information, About Elly is a suspense thriller. Elly, quite unknown to the entire group of Sepedia’s friends; still is invited to join them for the weekend at a beach house. The other couples and friends have shown little intention to know Elly, other than that she is single and can be quite a match with Ahmad. But the movie turns out differently with the sudden disappearance of Elly while watching the children at the beach. Eventually his fiancé comes to know and while interrogation everyone more or less withheld information. Here Farhadi’s brilliance lies with the portrayal of each character and how they respond during crisis.

The Colour of Paradise : Directed by Majid Majidi ‘The Colour of Paradise’ makes me sob like no other Irani movie. The movie narrates the tale of a blind, motherless boy and his father. Due to his disability Mohammad becomes the burden and obstacle in the way of his father’s marriage so just like that he abandons him to the mercy of God. Once again Majid has proved his brilliance as a spokesperson of children.

From depicting contemporary conditions to emotional crisis Iranian cinema will never disappoint you.
