The problem with internships today is that we are not getting proper practical skills. It is a big issue because in the job market, the companies not only require skills but they want real-life experience and that’s what the internships are supposed to be for. The companies are so lazy about these internships, they just sort of give a desk to an intern and expect them to figure it out and this is not fair because when we leave college, we were asked about our practical knowledge. This is the fundamental problem with the internships, the companies are not putting enough effort and time, companies should actually give us the practical skills and actually train us so that when we hit the job market after college we come with boatload of skills instead we are getting coffee for the staff.

I think companies need to step up to their game and say here’s your internship programme, here’s what you are gonna do and here’s the skills we are going to give you so that when you come into the workforce either you come and work for us or you go and work for another company and become a valuable cog in the workforce.

So if you are an entrepreneur or a businessman, start giving students or interns some serious skills that they can use, that they can apply even in their studies next semester or when they leave the college they can come work for you and you don’t have to spend too much time or finances training them.

I think we need to demand from our employers to be given substantial projects. It is important to ask a lot of questions before we join an internship like ‘what will I learn?’, ’Who will I meet?‘ and ‘What is the typical day for me going to look like?’.If we are in an internship and that isn’t providing these things I think that we should start doing whatever we can do to build a lot of skills. We should start doing freelance work. We should make the most out of the opportunities that come our way. Start working on this system and see how far we can go with it.
