Who gives a sneak-peak into the lives of our idolised celebrities?

Who exposes red-tapism and corruption?
Who gives precautionary steps to fight diseases?

Media or rather mass-media is a household term. It is a visual representation of news. It was originally formulated with a view to act as a check and balance on the work of the government, bureaucrats and executive department. Media was formulated to make people connect with their leader’s actions, to make them aware of what’s happening around the town and cities, to awaken them of their responsibilities, to expose the malicious and corrupt officials, to unite the people and to do what the centre cannot.
With so many “do’s” and “to’s”, media is indeed one of the most powerful tool that exists today only if independent. Independent media will enable it to scale new heights, no one can imagine.
“The press is not only free, it is powerful. That power is ours. It is the proudest that man can enjoy.”- Benjamin Disraeli.
Historically, media was born as organs of the people against feudal oppression. In Europe, it played a major role in transforming a feudal society into a modern one. Everyone is aware of the role of print media in preparing the people for andduring the American and French Revolution.
It has a big responsibility to fight backward ideas such as casteism and communism in countries like India, which are still way behind the global level of modernity and development. We are still going through the fire of under-development and rudimentary approaches to modernism.
Today, when politicians are taking full advantage of their positions, and crime syndicate is making the life of the common man miserable, taxpayer’s money siphoned; MEDIA indeed has a great responsibility. As a fourth pillar of democracy along with Judiciary, legislature and executive, it has an embracing role to act against the injustice, misdeeds and partiality of our society.
During the days of freedom, newspapers like Bal Gangadhar Tilak's Kesari, Mahatma Gandhi's Young India acted as a platform to place the demands of common Indians and to express solitude with the freedom fighters.
Currently, Media bears double responsibilities. It has the power to shape public opinion and strengthen the society and it must adjudicate its power to the welfare of the public.
“Independent Media can go to where the silence is and break the sound barrier, doing what the corporate networks refuse to do... It is not our job to cosy up to power. We are supposed to be a check and balance of government”- Amy Goodman
While we must be extensively thankful to media for bringing about the world at our drawing rooms, it is also important for media to realise the tremendous power it holds in a nation and use it judicially for the overall betterment of a nation.
