The Latest news on the unemployment front is a cause for concern for the Narendra modi led NDA government, long criticized for jobless growth even after making it a key election promise in 2014 for providing 2 crore jobs per year.Unemployment rate in India increased to 3.53 percent in 2018 from 3.52 percent in 2017. As per the latest data given by Centre for monitoring Indian Economy, the unemployment rate rose to 7.2% in February 2019.

There are various reasons for the rising unemployment in India and one such reason is the quality of the Indian education system. Taking an example of engineering graduates, India produces almost 20 lakh engineers every year, but only thousands of them get a good placement or get a job offer. As per a survey almost 90% of graduates in India are not employable or they are not capable enough to get hired. The education which Indian institutions are providing is more focused on theoretical basis rather than focusing on practical knowledge for the students.

One more reason in my personal opinion for unemployment in India is love for government jobs. Even in the 21st century when the service sector/private sector is at boom and contributing more than half of the total India’s GDP, people find government jobs more secure and stable. They prepare for 4-5 years just to get a government job, taking a recent example of Indian railways which advertises a job vacancy for over 2 lakh people who are at least S.S.C pass out. Ironically, Indian railway received around 2 crore application of Graduates, post graduates, PhDs, for the kind of a post where only a 10th pass was required.Indian government needs some fundamental changes is the education system to cater to the problem of rising unemployment.
