What is Bullying?
Bulling is the repeated aggressive behaviour that can be physical, verbal, or relational, in person or online. These actions are usually done by people who have more influence or power over someone else, or want to make someone else feel less powerful or helpless.

Bullying should not be confused with ragging or conflicts with other people or disliking someone, but it could be because of conflicts or dislike.

The behaviour that can be considered as bullying includes :

  • Spreading rumours or lies about another individual

  • Intentionally repeatedly hurting someone physically or mentally

  • Being rude and impolite

  • Intentioanlly stalking someone

Bullying can happen anywhere - school, home, work, online, etc. Bullying should not be taken lightly because the end results are always the same : the individual being in severe distress or pain.

The question that comes to every individual's mind who has been bullied is : Why do people bully?
Generally people bully because they want to dominate others, show power and improve their social status. These individuals usually have high self-esteem and show little regret towards bullying and do not consider it as morally wrong to bully others. They feel that it is normal to bully people and look down at them.

Whereas, other people bully out of frustration, they may struggle socially, they might be victims of bullying, to escape from something or simply because they are jealous of the other person.

Bullying is a serious problem that impacts the physical and psychological well-being of an individual. A few problems that arise due to bullying are :

  • Depression, feeling of lonliness, anxiety and isolation : These problems make eating, sleeping, engaging in recreational activities, etc. very difficult. They affect the day-to-day life of the individual. It also makes it difficult for them to create relationships with both friends and partner.

  • Increase suicidal tendencies : Sometimes, bullying affects the individual to a level where he/she start suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) which increases the suicidal tendencies of the individual. It puts them on a higher rise of committing suicide.

  • Low self-esteem : Bullying damages the victim's view about themself, it makes them incapable to trust their decisions and themselves as capable human beings. They do not view themself as desirable, capable and effective individuals.

  • Lower academic performance : Bullying leads to lower class/academic performance because the individual tends to miss school college altogether. Their skipping or dropping out of school/college also affects their success in life.

Bullying is often overlooked by parents, teachers and other individuals. The children should be brought up in such a way that they are taught to respect eachother, because bullying is a serious problem in India. The problem of bullying should not be overlooked by anyone because, sometimes, the impact of bullying is permanent and may leave a mark in the individual's life forever.

Let's unite against bullying and help every individual out there who is suffering from bullying!
