I was never into makeup. I used to find makeup quite overpowering and loud. But it was not until I started watching videos of various beauty gurus that I came to realize that makeup isn't that easy. It takes a lot to find a foundation of your shade or getting that winged eyeliner. Even applying eyeshadow is not child’s play. Makeup is an art which can be perfected through years and years of practice.
Huge respect for the makeup gurus out there who makes the process of applying makeup look very easy. Even though it isn't.The Youtube beauty community has garnered popularity in recent years. Famous members include Nikkitutorials, Jeffree Star, Manny MUA, Huda Beauty, James Charles and many more.
I love the fact that the beauty community is tightly knit like peas in a pod. They are vocal about the brands that are not living up to the standards. Because of this, brands have started catering to the needs of the people. We owe them (makeup gurus) a lot. Brands have started producing foundations in a wide range of colors in order to be inclusive. This practice is not limited to a country but is worldwide now. Even, Indian brands have started to follow suit.
They ( YouTubers) have worked hard to achieve this status. Yes, it ain't easy to be in this line of work. As a result of their mass appeal, they have had a chance to collaborated with cosmetic companies and launch their makeup collections. Most of these products tend to be pretty high end. Naturally, that results in additional revenues for the beauty gurus.
Like others, this community is incomplete without some drama and spilling of the tea (literally and metaphorically). The drama helps the industry thrive. Sometimes they used these tactics in order to get more fame and publicity. I mean it makes sense because life is a competition. It's a dog eat dog world. However, it does not end well. Some of them have left the community because of this drama. The best example is of the then famous makeup guru Michelle Phan. She was a pioneer in the beauty community.
She paved the way for other beauty bloggers and vloggers. She started her youtube channel around 13 years ago. Her channel blew up in 2009 with the video “Barbie transformation video’” and “lady gaga bad romance look”.She became one of the most successful beauty youtubers. Then she quit making YouTube videos two years ago. The reason is that the fame was affecting her mental health and giving her anxiety attacks. Also, she wanted to be isolated from all the toxicity.
While the makeup community has provided benefits to us if it’s actually good a thing or not still remains a question.
