Sri Lanka is an island country located in the Indian Ocean, southwest to the Bay of Bengal and southeast to the Arabian Sea. It is officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and its capitals are Colombo and Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte. It has a population of 2.14 crore people. The official languages spoken are Tamil and Sinhala and the most practiced religion is Buddhism, followed by Hinduism.

The country is known to have great historical and mythological significance. The pre-history of Sri Lanka dates back to more than 125,000 years. One of the earliest mentions of the country was in Hindu-mythology, in the epic Ramayana, according to which Lanka was created by a great sculptor Vishwakarma for the Lord of Wealth. It was referred to as 'Lanka' in the Ramayana.

Sri Lanka is located on the Indian tectonic plate and is separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Strait. According to Hindu mythology, a land bridge made out of stones existed between India and Sri Lanka, whose remains are currently known to still exist below the sea level. There are a lot of mysteries related to the bridge as well as many other things mentioned in the mythologies which are yet to be discovered, which again makes the people want to visit Sri Lanka out of curiosity.

Due to its high historical and mythological importance, Indian tourists tend to show an interest in visiting Sri Lanka. Along with that, being an island country, it is quite beautiful and attractive and has a lot of beaches and coastal areas. Tourism in Sri Lanka is growing rapidly.
