One day, I was going to karlepalli to meet my friend Mr. Karthikeyudu. Once I reached the village, I heard about his heroic solving ability in a case                      “missing of twin brothers named Pedda Banti & Chinna Banti”. I went to his grandpa’s house and I was welcomed by him with a warm hug. At that moment I had seen some sort of confidence in his eyes. We recollected memories, and I congratulated him for his success. That day was passed. He was a mechanical engineer.

On the very next day in the afternoon, an old woman came to meet Mr. Karthikeyudu. At first she congratulated him for his success and suddenly started to weep by saying about her deceased son who was a vegetable vendor. We offered her condolences and made her to relax. After some time, she started saying “Mr. karthikeyudu, I came from Rajandry. Three days back on the day of Sri Rama Navami, my son had fainted in my house. Immediately we called our family doctor, he said that my son had a heart attack and must be taken to the government hospital for treatment. Our family doctor had brought an auto rickshaw to take my son to hospital. My daughter in law also went along with him. After a few moments, they came back with the blood marks on their clothes and told me that they had met with an accident at the banks of river Godredi, and told me that my son had died due to severe injury on his head. At that particular moment, I got collapsed. But yesterday morning, as a part of funeral rituals, we all went to the river for a holy bath. I hadn’t noticed any traces of occurred accident. I got a doubt about my son’s death. Suddenly you came into my mind. Today, I came here to meet you, I beg you to solve the mystery behind my son’s death."

That moment fascinated me. I got tensed about the acceptance of my friend. But to my surprise, he said YES and asked her address and also told her that he would come tomorrow to her house. That old woman said thanks and went.

One the next day, we went to the old woman’s house. I waited outside and Mr. karthikeyudu went inside the house. It was raining heavily. Suddenly a young woman along with a kid came to the house. Young woman was completely wet as they were having one umbrella. I thought the young woman was the daughter in law of that old woman. Meanwhile that old woman asked about another umbrella and that kid said that the umbrella might get stolen. Karthikeyudu started interrogating the old woman, her daughter in law and the kid separately. He also examined the entire house. From there we moved to family doctor’s Clinic. The Clinic was locked. We found an umbrella at the clinic.

I asked karthikeyudu about the conclusion. He said it might be murder and will conclude within a very short time. We reached our home. Next morning, He wrote a letter to that old woman’s address. He hadn’t told me anything about his writing in that letter. We went to the post office and submitted the letter. My heartbeat was increased and my face had clearly shown that. Upon seeing me, he said that, ‘day after tomorrow we are going to close the case’.

Enthusiasm rose to its peak in me. I was literally waiting for the conclusion. And finally the day had arrived. We had started to go to Rajandry in a boat. We reached the banks of river Godredi. We waited there for some time. Suddenly, he asked me to bring the old woman to river banks. I went to the old woman’s house and asked her to come to the river banks. He was staying there with a woman, and to my surprise, she was none other than wife of that deceased person i.e daughter in law of the old woman.

Upon seeing us, He started saying “My dear Mother, she was the primary convict in murdering your son. She had killed your son with the help of your family doctor. Take her to the police station and tell them to interrogate her with the help of a lie detector. Surely you will know the truth.” After hearing this, the young woman felt in front of the old woman and started begging her for mercy. The Old woman with the help of locals over there had taken young woman i.e.. her daughter in law to a nearby police station. Since the young woman accepted her crime, the old woman thanked us and left.

We started going to our home. Out of curiosity, I asked him how he had concluded that the young woman had committed crime and also asked the reason for that young woman to kill her own husband. He said “My dear friend, It’s a murder where extramarital affair was the reason. At the time I interrogated the old woman, I had noticed a strange concept in medication which was being provided to her by their family doctor. She said that she was getting sleepy immediately after injection and it was given to her for every 3 days that was in the afternoon only. From the kid, I came to know that the deceased person used to go to the banks of river for bringing fish in the afternoons. He used to sell the fish along with vegetables. At that time for every three days, Doctor used to come to the house. He would give a chloroform injection to the old woman and made her sleep. Then doctor and the young woman used to share some private moments till evening. But, on the day before the day of Sri Rama Navami, due to heavy rain, son of old woman reached home early. He came to know about his wife’s extramarital affair with the doctor. Due to anger, without uttering any single word, he moved out and went to the Doctor’s clinic. In the evening, as usual doctor was about to start going to his clinic but he was stopped by young woman as she had seen the muddy footprints of her husband. She clearly understood that her husband might have known about her affair. He advised doctor not to go to the clinic. They both got tensed and she decided to kill her husband. Son of the old woman was waiting for the doctor to return. At night, he left the clinic and reached home. He left his umbrella at the clinic as the rain was stopped in the evening. When he came back to home, he was surprised by his relatives who came to celebrate Sri Rama Navami. Due to relatives in his home, he was unable to discuss the issue. Next day i.e… on the day of Sri Rama Navami, the young woman out of fear injected chloroform in the glass of water and gave it to her husband, I confirmed this after I had seen injection in the kitchen. After some time, son of an old woman had fallen into sleep. She then created a situation by making everyone to believe her husband had collapsed suddenly. Everyone had got tensed and she immediately called their family doctor. They said that they were taking to the hospital and in the way she had beaten her husband on his head and killed him. She and doctor hurt themselves and broke the glasses of auto rickshaw and came back home. They both had acted very well by making everyone believe that there was an accident. Doctor left the place.”

At that moment, I got Goosebumps. I asked how he came to know that the culprit was the young woman. He immediately gave the letter that was sent by him to old woman’s home. In that letter, it was written as……………..                     “I will be waiting day after tomorrow on the banks of the river godredi. Regards Doctor”

He said “If this letter had reached old woman, she would have come to our home yesterday and hence my dear friend, I had clearly estimated that the young woman was the one who killed her husband”

I was surprised. He followed a trail method and yes, he got succeeded. I always hear a myth about Engineers. They are the most practical people. They do possess unique qualities and hence they can’t be manipulated. This is the small case. He had used his mechanical brain to solve the mystery. He hadn’t used any detective principles in solving this particular case. I personally want him to undertake a critical case where there will be more complexity. Anyways, as of now, he can’t be termed as a detective as I always feel

“Success and failure cannot be calculated by one instance.”
