How common is it to see the mother and daughter relationship captured with all its intricateness, in our films? How often do we agnise, that after a certain age, they become two women dealing with their own set of issues – cycling between the roles of a mother and a daughter. MAD (Mother and Daughter) – the Short Film, by Royal Stag Barrel Select Large Short Films truly encompasses the untainted womanhood in the modern era. The movie is well directed and scripted by Vinod Rawat, capturing the exceptional and immortal love of a mother and daughter. It is divided into two sections, each denoting a very delicate matter handled in the most liberal way possible. The perfect 10 winner short film MAD at the Mumbai Film Festival is indeed a brilliant work, which eradicates the taboo of unethical ways of living that force to give up on ourselves.
The film exhibits the mother 'Sonal Jha', a homemaker from Patna who comes to visit her daughter 'Rita Heer', who resides in Mumbai, on the day of her father’s death anniversary. In the dim lighted flat of Mumbai, both feel at ease to talk to each other in the familiarity of their beloved. The duo has captured the essence of acceptance and support required in any relationship. As they sit in the living room and strike a conversation, in both the features they end up confessing their most inglorious secrets. These secrets despite being an illicit are well supported by the mother and daughter in a very uplifting manner.The feeling of togetherness is as intact as ever, when they both become the hero to each other’s destiny.
The film has a raw touch to it and the director has not put in any background score to make it feel natural. What can be viewed as the remarkability of the film is, that how it gains the undivided attention of the viewer. The way characters bring out the seriousness of the issue through their dialogues is just howling. The viewers cannot shift their eyes filled with questions from the screen, in order to know what will come up next?
The end gives an empowering touch to the story which is also an afresh in their lives. Vinod Rawat has captured the whole essence in a very well tone beginning from anticipation and grimness, coming towards ease and laughter. It undoubtedly is a unique capture compelling us to think about the standards set by all of us as a society and the revolution which is still in construction. It displays the power of acceptance which solves most of the problems in the society.
