Wanna One : A Bittersweet Journey

A kpop fan must have definitely heard of the group, Wanna One. They became one of the most popular groups, in a very short span of time. Wanna One was active for a time period of one and half year, after which they disbanded, as their contract ended.

The journey began with a survival show “Produce 101 Season 2”. Through the show, citizens of Korean or “national producers”, as they were called on the show, voted and selected 11 trainees from 101 trainees, who showed their skills through various performances. The final line up consisted of Kang Daniel, Park Jihoon, Lee Daehwi, Kim Jaehwan, Ong Seongwu, Park Woojin, Lai Kuanlin, Yoon Jisung, Hwang Minhyun, Bae Jinyoung and Ha Sungwoon. Their debut was highly anticipated, and their fans were known as “Wannables”.

Just like I.O.I, a group which was formed from the first season of the survival show, Wanna One was also extremely popular. Their successful debut is enough to prove their popularity. They went on to win many awards on music shows, for their debut song, which is a rare accomplishment. All their albums were well received by fans and were very successful.

Apart from their accomplishment in the music industry, Wanna One had a very high brand or market value. The members were some of the most popular and influential artists in Korea. So, they were always in demand to appear on variety shows and programs. Throughout the time Wanna One was active, they appeared on many shows. The members also featured in music videos of many singers. Once again, proving their popularity.

They were in a lot of commercials or CFs, as they are commonly known. All the brands they endorsed, saw a rise in their sales during that time period. Many items which they endorsed, would often be sold out. Thus proving that Wanna One had a very strong fan base.

Wanna One held concerts all over the world, as a part of their world tours. Such a feat can usually be achieved by well established artists and idols. For a rookie group, which debuted less than a year ago, it was a huge achievement. During their world tours, they performed many songs as a whole group, as sub-units, as well as, individually. Since, watching Wanna One perform live was only possible during the 1.5 year period, wannables did not miss this chance to see them live. Fans who were able to go their concerts, are very fortunate.

Wanna One had a very hectic schedule with variety shows, world tours and album releases. Even then, because their time as Wanna One was limited and precious, they always looked forward to their activities. As a final goodbye, the group held a three-day concert in Korea, in January, this year. The members and fans alike shed tears at the end of every concert, and in this way, they concluded their activities as Wanna One.

Though, Wanna One has officially disbanded. Their fans, or wannables will continue supporting each member on the path they take. Their journey as Wanna One was bittersweet, but it is not the end. Hope that many people look forward to their future activities and continue supporting them.
