Chutney is a sauce or dry base for a sauce and it refers to a family of condiments from South Asian cuisines. Simple spiced chutneys originated in India around 500 BC and then it was adopted by Romans and made their way to England and France in early 1500 BC.

Chutneys enhances the flavour and can turn any dish into a finger licking delicacy. It is an all time favourite accompaniment in every Indian regional cuisine. The lovely colours on the table light up your mood and brighten your meal.

Indian food with a tangy hot side dish makes for a sauce winning combination. There are endless type of chutneys which are served in India and they differ from region to region.

Chutneys can be made up with fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices. Usually one ingredient predominates the taste and that’s how the chutney is made.

Chutneys act as appetizers and some are also good for digestion. They add their own flavour and foods like idli, samosa, dosa, and chaat seems to be incomplete without it.

Mint chutney

It is probably the most famous type of chutneys served in North India. It is made with mint leaves, green chillies, lemon juice, ginger, and garlic. It has beautiful green colour and is a must for chaat, samosa, kachoris, and dhokalas. When mixed with coconut and be served with idli and dosa.

Tomato chutney

It is a spicy and tangy chutney made from tamatoes, onion and garlic. This chutney pairs extremely well with idli, dosa, uttapam, and vada.

Coconut chutney

It is made up of coconut. South Indian food is just incomplete without it. There are many varieties of this chutney like spicy coconut with green chilli, red coconut chutney, coconut curd chutney, garlic coconut chutney and many more and every chutney is lip smacking.

Mango chutney

It is made with semi ripe mangoes and has a sweet and tangy taste, addition of finger makes it more delicious. It is served with main course meal and can be taken with chapattis and paranthas.

Tamarind chutney

Sweet, tangy and gooey chutney made with tamarind, dates, jaggery, and ginger powder is a one stop chutney for all chats and fries savoury snacks like samosa, tikki ,kachori and pakoras.

Red chilli garlic chutney

It is made with just 3 ingredients – dry red chillies, garlic and salt. It is very versatile and be added to spice up sev puri, ragda patties, bhel Puri and momos. When desi ghee is added it becomes more flavourful and can be eaten with paranthas and meals.
