Attacked during crimean war (Britain 1854) thousands of severely injured British soldiers would wail lying helpless on the stretchers just when a captivatingwomen holding a lamp would walk past them draining all their torment and woe.

Florence Nightingale was her name. This ( Nightingale ) Italy born British nurse is the winner of Order of Merit ( merit awarded for exceptional armed services ) she has published numerous works related to medical knowledge and is also known as the founder of modern nursing. Having decided to pursue nursing at a very young age, Nightingale persuaded her unconvinced parents into letting her follow her dreams rather than marrying into a propertied family like an ideal women of the Victorian Era. Nightingale earned a nursing job in a Middlesex hospital ( London ) where she was promoted to higher post for her admirable services. Throughout her services, her intent was to provide solicitous, hygenic aid to the victims.

During the crimean war era, Nightingale received a letter from Secretary of War Sidney Herbert, asking her to assemble a team of nurses to treat the wounded British soldiers. As soon as Nightingale arrived in crimea with her team, she witnessed a very doleful scene at the infirmary. The extremly insanitary, deleterious atmosphere of the clinic made the soldiers more ailing and lifeless. The poor sanitation and lack of basic medication or supplied was killing the soldiers more than the wounds of wars. Nightingale decides to buckle down and work hard to better the conditions for the soldiers as well as the

infirmary. She got every corner of the place disinfected and took care of the injured like her own. After she took charge of the place, the death rate fell tremendously. She would take care of everyone's need herself. She would walk through the place at late nights with a lamp in her hand to make sure everyone was vigorous. This kind hearted gesture made her admirable. Moved by her benevolence, the troops would cherish her by calling her "The lady with the lamp".

Later she campaigned and helped in raising funds for many salient causes. She would also donate her reward money for noble causes. Also regarding death rates of British soldiers in India, she believed that it was beacuse of poor maintainance of the surroundings, impure water, over crowding etc. She believed that the health of the British army and the citizens of India were associated so she worked to improve the sanitary conditions of the country as well. She had done much more generous labour for the sake of people but her contribution during Crimean Era was exceptionally indelible and obliging. Her service for the soldiers was definitely tremendous, but her presence among the troops has cured many wounds than any sanitation could. It was as ifshe walked into the vicinity of ailing with a lamp in her hand and erased all the darkness in their lives with the light that radiated from within her heart.

Such was the impact of her presence. Such was the beauty of her heart.
