What is Internet of Things?

So, the most trending technology which could change our future is 'IOT'. But what IOT actually is?

Yes, we all know it stands for Internet of Things and the meaning is also as simple as the name explains us.

Various definitons of IOT:

• 'IOTforAll' says - The Internet of Things, or "IoT" for short, is about extending the power of the internet beyond computers and smartphones to a whole range of other things, processes and environments. Also, Those "connected" things are used to gather information, send information back, or both.

• 'Techtarget' defines IOT as - The Internet of Things, or IoT, is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and also the ability of IOT Device to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.

• 'Wikipedia' says that - The Internet of Things(IoT) is the extension of Internet connectivity into physical devices and everyday objects. The devices can be embedded with electronics, Internet connectivity and other forms of hardware (such as sensors). These devices can communicate and interact with others over the Internet and they can be remotely monitored and controlled from anywhere around the world.

Simply saying -

IOT is nothing but a concept/process of connecting almost anything with the internet for various different purposes/goals.

Now, all the "Things" that are being connected to the internet can be put into 3 categories:

Firstly, things that can collect information and then send it.

There are various Sensors like temperature sensors, motion sensors, moisture sensors, air quality sensors, light sensors, etc. These sensors,when connected to the internet, provides us information from the environment and which in turn helps us to make more intelligent decisions.

It can be connected to IOT by sending the data to a place from where it is accesible from anywhere in the world i.e. the 'Cloud'.

Secondly, things that can receive information and then also act on it.

There are various machines which are known only getting information and then acting as per the task defined to them. Like your printer receives a document and it prints it. Also our car receives a signal from your car keys and the doors lock open.

So, these devices are those which only needs data/command through which they can be made to act accordingly. And the 'Cloud' can be also used to recieve data.

Finally, things that can do both.

The real power of the IOT arises when the 'things' from the "Internet of Things" can do both of the above. Things that can collect the information and then send it, but also do receive information and act upon it.

Lets, take an example & understand it.

Here, the steps 1 & 2 which reads the data from the temperature sensor & sends it to the cloud. Thus falling into the 1^st category.

While step 4 & 5 which recieves data from the cloud & turns on the fan can be said to be in 2^nd category.

Finally, the whole process together i.e. the 3rd category is, what is the real goal of an IOT system?
