A 16 year old rape victim said - " I WOULDN'T REPORT THE CASE, BECAUSE I KNEW EVERYONE WOULD BLAME ME"

For the society , crime committed could be a one day affair or a headline in the news for a few days. But have we ever thought that, how traumatized the crime leaves the victim. When the traumatization comes in the picture, the victim could no longer live his normal daily life , may it be because of the societal process he would face or the “so” –“called” loss of respect of the victim and the family members. Most of cases, related to sexual offence are not reported in the court, you know the reason , why they aren’t reported? The answer in the secondary victimization that the court proceeding would bring to the victim.

Victimization could defined as the process which involves being victimized. It basically gives an idea about the after effects of becoming a victim. In a broader sense, it can also include various factors prevailing in deciding the person becoming the victim of a particular crime, effects of the crime and the rates of criminal activities in that specific area or the age group.

The most common form of victimization includes harassement , which is not so simple term, as all of us might think. It could be defined as the unwanted action related to any protected characteristic of an individual. Harassment is usually aimed at degradinga person’s dignity in his eye’s as well as in that of thesociety. Cases of theft and burglary can also be included under the various forms of victimization. Just think about the situation, tomorrow is a wedding at your home and you get a news there is a theft at home in which most of the money was stolen, and there are very less chance for you to rearrange that then? Wouldn’tthat make a victim?

The other classifications of victimisation includes, primary victimization , which is caused directly when the crime was being committed to the victim. The example of primary victimization could be a rape victim or a victim ofmurder. The next classification included,is the secondary classification, which is caused by the society to the victim. All thanks to our “so”- “great”-“society” ,even if you want to forget an incident , they would treat you as a “victim” and most of the sweet action of their’s would lead back you to the step, where you started trying to live your normal life after the incident. The other classification included in the various types of victimization includes, re victimization , which involves becoming the victim of the same crime again. It is usually believed that, a victim of the same crime crim earlier is more prone to the criminal act again, though this line completely depends on the mindset and will power ofthe victim , because there are cases where the person turns out to be stronger from any past victimization.

The various effects of victimization includes, psychological disorders, emotional impacts ,depression, post traumatic stress disorder, munsachen syndrome, martyr sundrome and also that leads to financial loss. The only way to treat the disorders caused as the after effects of the crime is the support of friends and family in order to lead a normal life, as they were earlier. The society needs to understand that, it was not the victim who is at fault but the criminaland so he only should be punished within the law and outside the law even. They should understand that it is the criminal whose respect is lost in the society and not of the victim and his family member’s.

HEALING BEGINS WHEN YOU SHED THE VICTIM MENTALITY.
