Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Indian poet born on 27 November 1907,Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, was one of the most acclaimed Hindi-language poets of the 20th century. His long lyric poemMadhushala(The House of Wine) was published in 1935, brought him huge fans. Bachchan’s public readings were attended by thousands of people, and are still-popular work was translated into English as well as many other Indian languages and was performed onstage and set to music. He continued to writepoetry while teaching English at Allahabad University and worked in promoting hindi literaturein the government of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru .In the 1970s, Bachchan published a four-partautobiography, which also created a stir in the literary world; an abridged English translation,In the Afternoon of Time,appeared in 1998. In his later years his fame was eclipsed by that of his son, Bollywood actorAmitabh Bachchan. The dismissal of a great writer took place on 18 January 2003 in Mumbai.
