‘ Barbie’ the doll was first created by Ruth Handler the co-founder of Mattel, she got this very idea of creating something like this from her daughter Barbara who was very interested in playing with paper dolls. The first barbie doll made it's debute in the year 1959 which was named after Ruth’s daughter in New York Toy Fair.
Initially these 3-D models of barbies didn't get positive response reason being that at the initial stage barbies were all fair, thin, the one with perfect hair, body type and statue of perfection and the girls from their childhoods only were given those dolls and maybe not intentionally but babie dolls were the role models for the girls because they had always been playing with them since childhood and then they wanted to be like them, whereas the matter of fact was that not very girl could be fair, thin, with perfect hair, perfect body type and what not. Hence these barbie dolls started getting negative responses in it's initial stage.
No sooner from the year 1961 barbies started inspiring ‘legacy of ground breaking careers’. i.e; barbies started coming up in outfits from various different occupations like scientists, teacher, doctor, etc. However barbies had a social impact on black people specially because being fair is not their characteristic feature neither is having straight golden hair. So the first African American barbie made her debut in the year 1968 which was named Christie and the first black barbie made it's debut in the year 1980.
Later the production of barbies in every shape, size, colour and occupation raised it's production to another level. These varieties in colours, figures and occupations nailed the concept that girl in every shape, size or colour is beautiful and should be accepted by the society the way she is.
