Mental health refers to psychological, emotional and social well being. It’s sad that mental health is given less importance as compared to physical health. But I feel, mental health should be given as much importance, if not more. Because in some way or the other, your mental health affects every aspect of your life. Mental health disorder doesn’t mean being crazy or unstable. It can be in various forms. It can be in the form of depression, anxiety, eating disorders or any other mental ilness. And if not taken care of, it can lead to harmful results.

People nowadays are very busy with their lives and they hardly have time for themselves. And in this process, sometimes we tend to ignore our own mind or our mental health thinking that its just stress. And this behaviour extends to the people we know as well.

There are many people out there who face eating disorders because they struggle with their body weight. They obsess over losing weight and starve themselves to the point where their health detoriates. Is getting a slimmer waist worth ruining your health?

Apart from eating disorders, many people suffer from depression too. It might be due to stress, some issues at work or school or college, some traumatic experience which is still haunting them, abuse or something else. And sometimes these people get isolated from the rest and it’s hard to find out what they are going through on the inside. Of course not everyone is comfortable with sharing their problems out in the open, but if talk it out or get professional help, I feel things might turn for the better.

I suffer from anxiety and I have realized how many times, I had to face difficulties because of it. Although my case isn’t severe but there are times where I get so anxious that I go blank during exams and I’m not able to write properly or remember what I studied. Anxiety has become quite a common problem today and many people get anxiety attacks when they are nervous and tensed.

Mental health is an issue faced by children, teenagers, adults and as well as people in old age. Regular exercise may help in mental fitness and help fight anxiety, depression, sleeping disorders and it boosts your overall physical health too. Mental health awareness is a very sensitive and important topic and it should be spread more so that people get to know it’s importance and effects. If you know someone who needs help, kindly reach out to them and talk to them. And if you need help, please talk to someone. There’s always a solution to every problem if we just look for it.

Fortunately, people nowadays are getting somewhat aware of mental health and its importance and I feel it should be introduced as a subject in schools and colleges. Teenagers go through a whole lot of emotional changes and it is necessary to educate them about mental fitness. Moreover for people who don’t want to talk face to face, there are organisations like NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) who have toll free help line numbers and they provide support and help those in need.

So go ahead and help those in need and work for a cause which actually help in building up the inner strength and an overall fitness of an individual.
