Here are some tips and tricks one can keep in mind and avoid such scam artists.

  • When you are traveling to some other country, dress like them. This is a great way to confuse the pickpockets. Don’t overdress yourself, avoid wearing expensive things, this will make you look wealthy and pickpockets will come after you.

  • Don’t showoff while traveling. Avoid wearing expensive things. Also, don’t show off your expensive gadgets to everyone walking by. Keep them secure in your bag. Don’t keep your camera for the show. Keep it in its bag safely and keep the bag in your backpack. Most of the times pickpockets see your camera bag and try to take it. Keep your laptops in its bag. If you are strolling in the city, you don’t need to carry it but while you are on the airports, avoid keeping your laptop in a laptop bag. Keep it in some nontraditional case, so that it is not easily identified as a laptop.

  • Carry a dummy wallet with yourself. This will confuse the pickpockets and they will take it as your real wallet. Keep your money, credit cards, passports and other identification cards in a money belt or pouch. This way it is always attached to your body and is in front of your eyes.

  • Show confidence. Don’t be insecure. Walk on the roads like you know every way of the city and you are not lost even if you are lost. If you show unsure expressions on your face, pickpockets will pick this up and will try to help you but instead, they are taking advantage of it and conning you.

  • If someone attacks you and they have a weapon, give whatever they are asking for and then go directly to the police station to report about them. It is better to lose some mere possession, then losing your life.
