Goa is small state located in the south west coast of India. Goa came under India in 1961. Goa was under the rule of Portuguese for more than 400 years. It has a lot of Portuguese influence in their religion, food, festivals and architecture. Beyond the party life, lies a Goa that is true to its nature and ethnicity. Goa might be a small state, but it is very diverse. All kinds of festivals are celebrated here, be it even Onam from Kerala. The people of Goa, as said by many, have the blood of football and dance running through them. This you can see by the way kids place football and also by the way people dance at festivals.

Apart from this, Today I will focus on the Carnival of Goa. Goa is criticised by their own leaders for celebrating Carnival. The carnival was something that the Portuguese brought to Goa. They celebrated carnival three days before Ash Wednesday [the start of lent]. Those were the three days they danced and made merry, because after that they had to stop drinking, eating meat etc, according to the Roman Catholic Tradition. Most of the Goans were converted into Christians, even they had to follow the Roman Catholic Tradition. The Portuguese used to make the Goan people attend and dance for them in the floats, thus it became a kind of feast for them too.Nowadays, the people who influence our walk and talk, say it is bad for us to continue what is there in our culture.

Carnival is a festival that is famous in Goa. Though there are controversies that drugs are injected in the crowd [well Goa is happy to tell you, It’s false]. Carnival is celebrated by all folks, old and young. So, wat is the carnival? There is king MoMo who leads the parade. The parade consists of many floats made by carnival enthusiasts [ Goans]. It is celebrated in the major towns in Goa- Panaji, Margao, Vasco and Mapusa. The carnival has a lot of ethnic importance as well. In the floats, there are messages for people and some even depict Goa’s actual culture. People travel from far just to put their floats for display. Ironically, you can see Christians here more than in churches. The parade usually starts at 3 and ends late at night, especially the Panaji one.Everyone goes to see something new every time. Nevertheless, the Carnival is celebrated with the same enthusiasm.
