The surgeries, the acid attacks, the bullets you took.
The burns, the beatings, the war wounds you say don't look good.
Whether you've been through this or not
Please know that you don't need to hide those scars.
Behind each scar is a story of pain.
But don't let that scar make you live in shame.
They show that you've been brave and have now become stronger.
No, you don't have to try to hide them any longer.
After all those things you overcame,
Scars are the proof that you'll never be the same.
Why let only your beauty show,
when your hurt can speak so much more?
Why not let your scars be a sign
that you fought the battle and didn't die.
You weathered the storm and now you can fly.
Your scars show others that you made it alive.
The world's a bad place but you can help make it good, by sharing the story of the wounds you withstood.

Wear them with pride.
Use them to inspire.
Don't think of them as ugly and disgusting.
Think of them as special and encouraging.
Use them to show that we all have our share of struggles.
But we can still win, we can make it out of the rubble.
Don't keep your scars closed,
Stop hiding them away.
To the world, let your scars be a message of hope,
That you got through it and so can they.

I wrote this one for a friend when I heard her story. She underwent multiple surgeries as a teenager and that resulted in multiple scars. I noticed how she’d hide them every time we’d go out and in every picture we’d take, she’d make sure that they were covered up. She was embarrassed by her scars and thought they were ugly. She wanted to be normal so she’d never tell anyone her story. But every time I saw those scars, I couldn’t help but think that she was so cool. The only reason I thought that was because she was the happiest, most cheerful person I knew. She could make anyone laugh and she saw joy in every situation. Those scars are a reminder of all the pain she went through, of the bad times. But when I saw them, they inspired me to believe that after all she went through, she was still here and she was choosing to live life with joy. Her scars, to me, were a sign of her strength. I wanted her to wear them with pride, believing that she was strong. They didn’t have to be signs of pain when they could be messages of hope. It's very important to know that you don't have to create scars to get through something, self harm is never the solution, but you can learn to embrace the ones you have. So to everyone who’s ashamed of your scars, whether they came from a painful experience or they were yours since birth, don’t ever hide them. The dirty looks and stares don’t change or erase your strength and your story. This is who you are, these bruises and scars show that you are more than what happened to you. No one else can tell your story better than you, your voice needs to be heard. You are living proof that no matter what a bad place the world is, you didn’t let it get to you.
