Priest As A Sex Slave

Devadasi system was started in early 60s.This involves girls to get into works in the temple. They were equal to the priests. They performed all cultural dance and music for their Gods. In late 90s these girls were used for sex work. Then this system was banned by the Indian Government. Earlier when all girls were dressed up as brides and they dedicated their puberty to deity and served in temples.

Young girls in south India continue to be dedicated to the temples. Especially those in villages, and then are forced into prostitution. Though the laws have banned this ancient ritual, these girls often wear sarees and beaded necklaces and are treated spiritually, but the truth is they lead a life of a sex worker or slave. This continues to happen even now in most parts of Karnataka. The girls involved in this are mostly from the lower community who do not have enough money.

The reports published by the National Law School of India University and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences state that these laws are not strict and are poorly implemented and this acts as the main reason for this ritual to be done un-covered.

Though most of the girls are forced into it few accept it for their high privilege in the society. They don’t care about what people speak about it, they just do it for money. When asked why, their answer is just one word that is spiritualism.

This is not seen as a crime but it is a social problem which is present in our society. Anyone can stop a girl from dedication but no one does it. It is accepted as a part of culture.

A report states that this was banned in Karnataka in 1980s as these girls were led into prostitution. It also tells that at present devadasis are less in number and it gives an estimate count of 19,000 across 14 districts in the early centuries.

The government and NGOs are working to help girls to come out of this problem. They have tried to implement strict rules to help people out of it. When girls were asked about it they replied that they do not find any other choice and cannot reject when they are dedicated. They have to accept it and work as slaves for sex.
