Literacy is not just the ability to read and write. It is the process of obtaining knowledge. It is believed that the rate of problems would be less if a country is a literate one. We may call India as a literate country but education is always an issue here. The head among the social problems in India is illiteracy. India is a highly populated country and it stands first in illiteracy. The illiteracy is the main cause of the leading problems.

The total literacy rate in India is just 70% where 80% of men and 50% of women are literates. Still people think that women are just fit to sit in the kitchen. Parents still don’t believe in their daughters getting educated. Female literacy in a highly populated state like Uttar Pradesh is just 40%. More than 40% of girls are married before they turn 18. Though it is against Indian law the rural community still follows it. They don’t even know that this is against their law. This causes the dependency of women on men to read and write thus forming a vicious circle in which women are caught inevitably.

The rich people spend money on education but poor people cannot. All they want is to earn money for their daily bread someway or the other. So there is a less chance for them to enter school.

Even though government has provided free school education, illiteracy remains a problem in our country. Government provides connectives for meritorious students, banks are ready to give education loans and in most of the schools the fees for girl child are comparatively very less. Even though we have so many facilities the rate of illiteracy is still on the rise.

The literates are getting more and more literate and the illiterates are left back. This is the main problem with the current society. Though there are options for them to become literate, they are most of the time unaware about it. Most of the time teachers in government schools are less and few of them are not that qualified. They enter government school by bribing. Few government teachers take their job for granted and work very less. All these problems lead to a situation where the child is left uneducated.
