I had probably got the answer to all my questions. Robert had hired the businessman to kill Janet. That’s exactly why his fingerprints were present on the bottle of poison. After Janet was successfully murdered, he asked the businessman to blame Dave if he was caught. When the job was done, he killed Jack as well, to erase any evidence against him.
It was not possible for him to kill Tracy as she was well protected within her office building, and no stranger was allowed to meet her. Robert had played smart. Really very smart.
But I had gathered evidence against him.
And there was no way I’d let him get away with killing three innocent people. Definitely not if one of those innocentpeople was Janet.
I boarded the earliest available flight back. Surprisingly, Tracy had decided to accompany me. She probably wanted to do everything possible to teach Robert a lesson.
It took us around eight hours to finally arrive at Robert’s place. Mr. Steve was still there, trying to move ahead with his investigation, but unable to do so. Robert was sleeping in his room.
Strange, isn’t it? A man lost his wife, hardly two days ago. His wife was murdered, and the man was sleeping peacefully. Well, now you know why.
I called Mr. Steve aside, and played Tracy’s voice recording in front of him. Tracy stood beside me, trembling. I held her hand to calm her down. Mr. Steve scratched his eyebrow with his right thumb. I guess that was an old habit of his.
He stared at Tracy. She grabbed my hand tighter.
“Is she the one?” he said.
“Well, yes sir.” I replied.
He frowned, and then shook his head.
“Robert? This seems very unlikely. Why would he do that?”
“Well, he just did. He never loved Janet. I’m sure you know that.”
“Yes, that’s obvious. But, three murders in a row? Just for some money?”
“Sir, I don’t know what to say. But, as you know, I have proven my stand. And this girl is definitely mot lying.”
While Steve was trying to understand what was going on, Robert arrived from his room upstairs.
“What’s going on?”
He looked at Mr. Steve.
“Pardon me, but who are you?”
I froze. That’s when the truth dawned on me.
