During the 1990s, the BJP witnessed many internal squabbles which were mainly lead by Keshubhai Patel, Shankarsingh Vaghela & Suresh Mehta. But the tables were to turn and BJP was to conquer Gujarat in the coming future.
Building on its Hindutva plank, BJP was well prepared for the 1995 elections in Gujarat. Keshubhai Patel was projected as the party's candidate.
Moreover, BJP broke the Congress Party's winning formula of the 1980s that was to assemble the KHAM( Kshatriyas, Harijans, Adivasis and Muslims) in it's favour. Hence, Keshubhai Patel went on to become the first Cheif Minister from BJP govt. in Gujarat without coalition. But soon after the elections, the party was being torn apart. Shankarsingh Vaghela defected and formed Rashtriya Janta Party and overthrew Keshubhai Patel's govt. in 1996.
Vaghela became cheif minister for two years. But in the 1998 election, Keshubhai Patel's BJP won the elections and continued to do so for next two decades.
But after a stringbof natural calamities in Gujarat, Patel's govt. experienced a crisis. After the 2001 Bhuj earthquake, Keshubhai Patel had to step down and make way for Narendra Modi.
Modi after coming into power systematically dismantled local leaderships and refused tickets to leaders like Kanshiram Rana who had consecutively won six elections. But Modi's image was to be dented by a upcoming human rights disaster. It was alleged that the Modi govt. Did not do enough to contain the riots at least. The 2002 Elections were held in a highky polarised atmosphere. But the BJP was back in power, riding on the Hindutva plank. During this term, Narendra Modi maitained a firm grip over the party.
Modi travelled across the states reportedly delivering controversial speeches defending the riots. The Modi Govt. was accused of neglecting the minority community.
In the 2012 elections, Narendra Modi and Amit Shah aimed for more than Gujarat. They wanted the cheif minister to now be the nation's prime minister. And winning his state three times in a row made Delhi in his better reach. Following years marked the rise of Narendra Modi in huge numbers.
His rallies experienced more and more followers and soon after that in the year 2014, Narendra Modi was elected the Prime Minister of India.
