Literature refers to written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit. Literature is a way of propagating the art in its own way. It has immense power and the strength of words can evoke feelings in the heart of the reader. The words used while writing any piece may or may not hold imagination and conception, Imagination in turn leads to the construction of hypothetical world in our mind.
Be it a fictional or a non-fictional story, every word used in literature can be seen as the building bricks of a new world.
Literature also helps us to be aware about the world beyond our reach and know about the lives of people whom we may not ever meet or see. It includes detail analysis and observation about the real world we see and the set of opinions and ideas revolving around us. It imparts knowledge in an exquisite way and provides a different perspective to all it’s readers.
Defamiliarization refers to a writer’s taking an everyday object that we all recognize and, with a wave of his or her authorial magic wand, rendering that same object weirdly familiar to us- strange even. Instances of defamiliarization are rampant in genres like Science Fiction and travel narratives. For example, we see the effects of Defamiliarization in Jonathan Swift’s satiric travel story, Gulliver’s travels.
Therefore, we understand that Literature holds the power of captivity and can evolve out of the world as well as create different worlds along with it’s words.
