The longest running Hindi sitcom Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashma is immensely popular among almost everyone irrespective of their age, gender, background etc. Since it is a (in)famous show about which everyone knows and have their perspectives, here are some interpretations from the show to ponder upon:
Women deserve all rights in the world and aren’t bound to consider their husband’s opinion on every damn matter. They are independent (?) women of 21stcentury. So what if none of them have an identity of their own? So what if they are not shouldering equal responsibilities? Still, they have every single right they can imagine. These are our empowered women of Gokuldham Society. Kudos to them for getting pseudo feminism on point.
Men need to have their spouse’s permission to hang out with their friends. Even if you work hard day and night to provide for your family, you can’t take a day off and party with your friends if your wife does not approve of it. Also, consuming alcohol is immoral. Okay, this might not be your opinion but guess what? Your wife thinks so. You can’t really do much about it and accept the ridiculous imposition. If you don’t, your wife might lock you out of the house, like Mrs. Sodhi did once.
Hypocrisy can be easily concealed in the name of religion. Jethalal can not and will not approve of storing onions in his godown because, in his words, “mai Jain aadmi hu.” But it is okay for him do ‘Party-Sharty’. See, consuming alcohol is a personal choice, there is nothing right or wrong about it. But so is the curious case of onions. Isn’t it? Also, your religion approves of alcohol but not onions?Um…why so hypocrite Mr. Gada?
As they say, “Every child is special.” Really? Then why always Tappu gets to bat and others just field? Seriously, we are tired of seeing him boasting his heroism. How about others having a chance?
In the world of Gokuldham, body shaming is totally cool and no one objects to it. Be it the plump Hathi family or slender appearance of Patrakaar Popatlal, everyone in Gokuldham have an opinion on their weights. Any normal person would find their opinions offensive. But these people, though they preach morals and ethics at the end of every episode, find it totally normal to make fun of someone’s physique and diet.
Talking about diet, how can we forget Mrs. Mehta. She is a dutiful wife who forces her husband to gulp down some idiotic juices on a daily basis. Very conveniently viewers are made to believe that she is concerned for his health. Well Mrs. Mehta, sorry to burst your bubble, what Mr. Mehta undergoes is usually know as torture. Also, ever considered consulting a professional dietician instead of experimenting on your own?
Last but not least, ogling at someone else’s wife is normal. Also, is it okay on Iyer’s part the way he is handling it? Dayaben might divorce Jethalal if she ever finds out about his la la land fantasies.
