Mental health is as important as physical health and to maintain a perfect balance in life, one needs to care for both of them as one cannot be taken as a substitute for other.

But in countries like India, the topic of mental well being lacks awareness as people relate it with physical fitness and as a result, proper attention is not given to emotional as well as mental wellness.

The lack of sensitization leads to exclusion of mental patients as they are considered Crazy or Psycho but even the definition of these two terms are different from each other.

Depression, is always considered a topic that has an unsaid stigma attached to it.
Because no one wants their children or family members to be considered as "mentally SICK", and that is the reason why they try to keep this matter in secrecy and no medical treatment is given to the patient. As a result, their mental condition keeps on deteriorating and in some cases, such scenarios even lead the patient to commit suicide.

So why, why people try to hide it and make it a monster rather than treating it as a normal issue?

Depression is being colour-blind and being constantly told how colourful the world is.

Depression is a very serious issue. Its symptoms might seem normal at the initial phase but gradually, the person would seem dull and detached. And at times, the victim even starts drug abuse as it seems like a potential cure for depression for many. But it only deteriorates the situation further, and sometimes the matter slips out of the hands and the condition of the patient becomes untreatable. That is why, the role of family and friends becomes significant in the initial phases of depression.

Depression is a burning issue among youth and it is at its peak among them. This part of the population is highly vulnerable to depression due to rising levels of stress among the youngsters.

No one knows exactly what causes depression, but it can occur due to a variety of reasons.

• It could be due to a serious medical illness.
• Sudden death or loss of a loved one.
• Failure in love life or getting cheated by their partner.
• Past physical/sexual conflicts or abuses increases the vulnerability of getting affected by depression.

• A family history of depression may also increase the risk of depression for the person.
• Loss or failure in academics or professional life.
Depending upon the situation, depression could be minor or major.

The reasons are many, just like different ways that lead to only one destination, and that is depression.

Depression can be treated, but its treatment needs time and patience.

We need to care for the person a little more, spend time with them a little more. Proper care and constant social support can help a person battle depression and emerge victorious out of it.

It is not something to be ashamed of.
So, let's not make it one.
