"Happy Birthday!" says Chase's mother to him, as she tries handing him a fish pot. The fishpot is a home of a shiny golden fish that swims gracefully in the water. Chase hesitates a bit and looks down at the pot, he didn't ask for a gift as this. His mother looks at him with anticipation and he couldn't say no, he takes the fishpot and mumbles a small thank you. Chase had never had a pet before in his 20 years of being and even if a pet fish wasn't much of responsibility it felt unusual.

The way back hostel was mostly quiet because his mother didn't like goodbyes and he isn't much of a talker. "Call me or at least receive my calls, will you chase?", "I will" he promises and the car returns the gate. He looks down at the fish in the pot it intrigues him of how the fish always is so cheerful and how it swims with joy. He makes his way to the room and opens his door, the first thing he has to do today is to find a place for the fish. He looks around and notices how his room is a mess, joysticks, books, and clothes lying around everywhere.

He spots an empty space at the window and places the pot there. When he looks at the fish he watches how beautifully it swims in circles and then goes towards the window, he watches how the fish swims towards the window to look outside of it, he watches how the fish tries getting through the pot. He feeds the fish and the fish jiggles his way to the top of the water as it savors its food, a smile makes its way on Chase's face.

Chase's days are spent inside the four walls of the hostel room he only goes outside when he has classes to attend. Every day when he feeds the fish he watches how the fish swims and tries looking outside the window through the glass of the pot whereas he drowns himself in books and games. Its been a month and the fish won't give up it just swims to the window but the tiny fish doesn't understand that it lives in a glass pot. Every day he watches the fish and gets back to his routine, waking up, attending classes in the afternoon, coming back playing games, studying at night, sleeping and the same the next day.

A month later one evening when he feeds the fish he notices something strange, today the fish doesn't swim towards the window it swims towards him. He looks at the fish in confusion and waits for it to swim gracefully but the fish just stays at the place and swim a bit at the base. He thinks he is just overthinking and gets back to his routine books, games, sleep.

Ten days pass by and he notices that the fish won't go towards the window but swims towards him, he notices the fish watching him through the pot glass. It concerns him for the fish doesn't seem like the old graceful self it was once. The fish just swims at the bottom, it looks like it's frowning and it bothers him a lot. Today, when Chase puts the fish food in the pot the fish doesn't even care and just roams the base. Later he gets back to his routine for he doesn't know what made the fish this blue.

Two days later he comes back to the room from his classes he changes into a different shirt and gets to his desk, opens his book and turns the pages. Once he completes the chapter he takes a break, he looks at the window, he notices the fish looking out the window but the fish doesn't move, it just stays at a place and stares out the window. He goes to the fish pot and looks at the fish, the fish turns back and looks at him. A moment passes as chase and the fish just stare at each other.

Chase questions for who is in the pot, him or the fish? For one of them could go out but won't and the other wants to but can't.
