Churches are not just meant for weekly routined visits to thank the Lord for our lives and happinesses. They are the most travel worthy places that can amaze tourists with more than just devotion; architecture and history. Let's look at four most attractive churches in the world.
The Largest
The St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City is the largest church in the world. It stretches over 186 meters in length and has an internal area of 15160 square meters. The magnificent central dome of the cathedral rises to 136 meters high. St. Peter’s basilica is the most important church in Roman Catholicism. The vast cathedral can accommodate 20000 prayers at a time.
The Oldest
The Dura Europos Church in Syria is supposedly the oldest church in the world. It was apparently a normal domestic house converted for worship some time between 233 AD and 256 AD, when the town was abandoned after conquest by the Persians. It is less famous, smaller, and more modestly decorated than the nearby Dura Europos synagogue, though there are many other similarities between them.
The Most Beautiful
According to ratings and reviews from many websites and audiences, the Cathedral of St. Basil in Moscow, Russia, is considered to be the most beautiful church in the world. The building’s design, shaped as a flame of a bonfire rising into the sky, has no analogues in Russian architecture: “It is like no other Russian building. Nothing similar can be found in the entire millennium of Byzantine tradition from the fifth to fifteenth century… a strangeness that astonishes by its unexpectedness, complexity and dazzling interleaving of the manifold details of its design.” The cathedral foreshadowed the climax of Russian national architecture in the 17th century.
The Most Haunted
Seemingly my favourite, the St. Nicholas Church residing in the village of Pluckley (Kent, England) is the most haunted church in the world. This is possibly because the town around it is also known to be the most haunted place in all of England which given the UK's pretty bleak and violent history is definitely saying something. This church is haunted by multiple ghosts, most of which are unnamed, and their stories untold. However, the church does house Lady Derry who lost her child in life, and was so distraught after not finding it, that she died of grief. Supernatural activities happen at such a frequency in this church that it is almost impossible to overlook them.
So, the next time you're off to visit some church, make sure to look out for the unexpected. ;)
