We have come a long way and still some events are unforgettable that changed our country completely. Our country is still afflicted with problems such as corruption, racism, communalism, corruption, discrimination, etc. Since we got Independence a lot has changed and these events have taught us a lot. Here are some events which have changed the face of Indian Politics.

1.Indo-Pak War 1971

This war is still going on in some way or the other. It lasted for just about 13 days but it had major impacts over the country. It led to the creation of Bangladesh which was earlier called East Pakistan. The Pakistani army claimed around 3000000 lives. Indian Government supported the Banngladeshis. Pakistan attacked India and India declared a war. East Pakistan surrendered after this and that led to the birth of Bangladesh.

2.The Emergency

44 years have passed since the emergency upon India by India Gandhi. Some people call it ‘BLACK DAY FOR DEMOCRACY’ because of the unfair manner in which people were treated. Emergency started from 25 June 1975 and went on till 21 March 1977. Every fundamental right of a person was locked away and their freedom was taken away. Gandhi was largely criticized for her doings. She also didn’t like the laws of that time and took the work to re-write them. A major role who was against Gandhi was Jai Prakash Narayan. He was a selfish leader who stood against her government. He also started the JP Movement in Bihar. Many politicians went to jail for protesting against her.

3.Mandal Commission

Caste-based discrimination has been a major problem in all over India. Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribals were not equally accepted in the society and this was recognized after the Independence was the Government. After this, Other Backward Classes of society faced the problem of social involvement. Prime Minister V P Singh accepted the Mandal Commission in 1990. Mandal Commission included 27% reservation for the OBC candidates. This helped to break the shackles of the caste system. Many opposed to this reservation and many communities organized protests to be included in the OBC list.

4. Demolition Of Babri Masjid

Influenced by Hindutva, this is the result of the belief that 400 years before some Muslim ruler broke down a Ram Temple where Lord Rama was born. This came to the situation that peace will be restored when Babri Masjid will be broken down and the temple will be formed on the site. Again a Hindu-Muslim riot supported by Bhartiya Janata Party and Vishwa Hindu Parishad. The mosque was built during the rule of Babar. On 6 December 1962, karsevaks went inside the mosque and broke the mosque. This fragmentation added more problems to the communal violence already present in India. The BJP also included the building of Ram Mandir in their manifesto. And this has become a political agenda of the political system of India.

5.Gujarat Riots

This again is the result of communal violence between Hindu and Muslims in our country. In 2002, a train going from Ayodhya to Gujarat was burnt down by the conspiracy of some people. Around 59 Hindus were killed. After this people killed thousands of Muslims in rage and anger. Many people believe that Narendra Modi did not try enough to stop the riots. People also questioned about him being the Prime Minister. But his name came out clear after SC ran an investigation.

The riots became a major political event in history and have affected in a lot of ways.
