The term ‘Health' is officially defined by the World Health Organization, as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. This means a person needs to be fit physically, mentally and should be a good social person. We all strive for our physical health. The wounds that can be seen are healed by millions around the world. We also strive to be a good person, we do all we can to please the people around us. We know to take care of our body, our society, but when do we take care of the person inside the physical appearance? Is that person not important? Or is it selfish to take care of that person? It is crucial to find answers because only than can we accept Mental Health.

What is Mental Health?

We use this often, it is a very commonly used term but in the very wrong contexts.
Mental health is defined by the World Health Organization as "... a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities can cope with the normal stresses of life can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. It is not just the absence of mental disorder."

Mental health is often associated with mental illnesses. Mental well-being is mental health, being mentally healthy means to be able to associate with oneself and to be able to accept oneself the way they are. It is to be able to cherish and let a little narcissism in because the person loves themselves and does not look outside for validation.

"Mental health is all about wellness rather than an illness"

Confusion between Mental Health and Mental Health Conditions:

There has always been confusion between 'mental health' and 'mental health condition'". To clear out this confusion, experts have come up with many terms such as'positive mental health', 'mental well-being', 'mental happiness', 'subjective well-being', 'good mental health' to help identify with mental health. While a few have said that this helps them understand the term better, there are a few people who have said that this only added to their confusion.

To make it more other experts have created a continuum, where mental health is at the far left of the spectrum, representing well being and proper functionality while on the far right are the various mental health issues which affect the person in a much more severe manner.

It is important to understand that mental health is a very complex concept and it differs from person to person. It does not necessarily mean that a person without any mental health illnesses is a person who has a very much flourishing mental health. Likewise, it does not mean that a person diagnosed with a mental health illness might be doing very well in various aspects of their life.

Why is Mental Health Important?

Mental Health is all about being cognitively, mentally and socially healthy. It is about the way a person handles the relationships with people around them and the relationship they have with themselves. Mental health is not all about not having a mental illness. It is being able to accept yourself the way you are, it is being able to be a little narcissistic and not apologize for being the person you are. It is being able to love yourself a little more each day. It is being able to accept that life has its ups and downs, it is in our hands to sail through them with learning to improve.

Researchers have found that high levels of mental health are often associated with increased learning, creativity and productivity, more pro-social behavior and positive social relationships, and with improved physical health and life expectancy. In contrast, mental health conditions can cause distress, impact on day-to-day functioning and relationships, and are associated with poor physical health and premature death from suicide.

Having social relationships, being a vital part of the community and having positive relationships with people around you have helped in being mentally healthy. But it is not all about the people around you. If a person is not able to accept themselves the way they want to, if they can not love themselves they would love other people, then the person will be alone in a crowd. It is important to fall in love with oneself more with each day. It is important to understand that a person deserves nothing less than what they would wish for another person. Be a little narcissistic. Enjoy life the way you want others to enjoy because a moment passed does not come back.

Mental health is important. This is a topic that has been discussed for a million times now. It is reaching a lot of people and everyone is opening up to the various mental health illnesses like depression, anxiety, etc. With all this, comes the negative side, people have started to take depression lightly and use the term to describe a bad day. Depression is a serious issue in which people have known to destroy their lives and the lives of the people who care about them.

It is important for us to be able to understand that mental health is not visible to everyone. It is a silent killer. The weight of the issue needs to be understood and implemented the same way.

Mental health illnesses have become like a trend these days. It is vital to understand that a person who has any mental health illness would not wish it even for their darkest enemies. It is not a trend. It is a serious issue. Accept the issue.
